Even without further economic growth, the industrial economy would need new supplies of energy and materials extracted from the “commodity frontiers.” Waste disposal, including excessive amounts of greenhouse gases, keep rising. Less than ten percent of the materials coming into the economy (including the energy carriers) are recycled. Therefore, new ecological distribution conflicts arise all the time giving rise to an environmentalism of the poor and the Indigenous. Here we present insights from a global database documenting ca 4500 of such conflicts (the EJ Atlas). We also introduce a related project investigating how the digitalization of grassroots transformative initiatives in pursuit of environmental justice and biocultural diversity is unfolding amidst unequal digital endowments (the DIVERSE project).

you Been to Padaro Beach?
Hello! My name is Claire Tseng <claire...@ucsb.edu> and I am an undergraduate student at UCSB. I’m currently in the survey phase of my thesis, which is about how great white shark abundance is communicated to the public.
It takes about 45 minutes, and you’ll receive a $10 REI gift card as a thank-you. The only requirement to take the survey is that you must be an adult who has been to Padaro Beach. Thanks so much for your help! https://forms.gle/EVNUkgZgWtmow8db8

7) SAVE THE
DATE: Waste, Truth &
the Planet at
SB Literary Festival, May 3rd (FREE for students)
On Sunday, May 3rd, the inaugural Santa Barbara Literary
Festival presents Waste, Truth & the Planet, a timely,
incisive
conversation between Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Edward
Humes, author of Total
Garbage: How We Can Fix Our Waste and Heal Our World, and Kathi
King, Director
of Outreach and Education at the Community Environmental Council
here in Santa
Barbara.
Drawing on years of investigative reporting, Humes pulls back the curtain on the hidden systems that govern what we throw away, and the staggering environmental, economic, and ethical consequences of a culture built on waste. Together with Kathi King, he will explore the critical role journalism and community education play in driving meaningful change, and offer practical, actionable steps that individuals, communities, and institutions can take right now.
We believe this conversation sits squarely at the intersection of research, policy, and public communication that defines the UCSB Environmental Studies Program's mission and we would be honored to have you and your students in the room.
Students can attend for free using the discount code ENVIRO at checkout.

9) The Wild Rockies Field Institute
(WRFI) invites
you to experience Montana
Afoot & Afloat—a 22.5-credit fall quarter
What if your classroom stretched across Montana’s wild rivers,
open plains, and
mountain landscapes? The Wild
Rockies Field
Institute (WRFI) invites you to experience Montana
Afoot & Afloat—a 22.5-credit fall quarter that takes
you beyond
traditional learning and into the field. Traveling by foot and
kayak, you’ll
explore river systems, conservation, and land management across
some of the
most iconic landscapes in the American West.
This immersive course is designed for students interested in ecology, sustainability, geography, Native American studies, and natural resource management. Whether you’re curious about river dynamics, climate change, or Indigenous land stewardship, Montana Afoot & Afloat offers a hands-on, deeply engaging academic experience.
Course highlights include:
- Paddling through the Missouri River Breaks while studying river ecology in the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument
- Backpacking through Montana’s diverse landscapes, including areas surrounding Yellowstone National Park
- Learning directly from biologists, ranchers, and Tribal leaders
- Participating in small, discussion-driven classes while living and learning outdoors
At WRFI, we believe transformative outdoor education should be accessible. In addition to our existing tuition discounts and scholarships, we’re offering a limited opportunity to further support students eager to join this course.
The first two students to apply will receive a scholarship covering 50% of tuition.
This initiative is part of our broader commitment to expanding access to field-based education for students who are ready to take their learning into the outdoors.
Combined with other available aid, tuition for the full semester can be significantly reduced—while still including lodging (tents!) and all dinners.
We are currently accepting applications for Fall 2026. If you’d like to learn more, we’d love to connect—schedule a virtual conversation with our student advisor, Kelsey Wellington, or reach out directly at kelsey.w...@wrfi.net.
Take your education beyond the classroom—explore, learn, and experience Montana in a way few students ever do. Apply now!
