💡 Why do a Senior Thesis?
Over and over, Environmental Studies alumni describe the Senior Thesis as the most meaningful course they took at UCSB. Here’s why:
- 🔍 Gain hands-on experience conducting professional-level research
- 🌎 Become a subject-matter expert on an issue you care about
- ✍️ Graduate with a polished writing sample to share with employers or grad schools
- 🧠 Sharpen critical thinking, analysis, and communication skills that stand out in any field
- Earn 6 UD ES units that apply towards Area B ES Electives (B-1 for B.S.)
🚀 What to expect
ENV S 197 is a 6-unit elective taken in your senior year, where you’ll dive deep into a research question of your choice—bringing together everything you’ve learned in ES or HYDRO.
- Offered only in Fall Quarter (work continues all year)
- Complete your thesis across Fall, Winter, and Spring
- Final grade awarded at the end of Spring (retroactive to Fall)
- Eligibility: minimum 3.0 overall GPA + passion and willingness to put in the hard work
