- Friday, May 15th, from 5:30-7:30 pm CEC’s Hub, 1219 State

Join the Community Environmental Council
(CEC), the UC Santa
Barbara Environmental Studies Program, and the Environmental
Defense Center
(EDC) for a discussion around the risks of oil extraction and
the ongoing work
to protect our region’s vital resources. This annual Memorial
Lecture honors
the legacy of Darcy Aston, a 1981 UCSB Environmental Studies
alum and beloved
member of the Santa Barbara community, and brings us together to
explore
solutions for water quality, watershed protection, and
environmental
stewardship. This year’s program will feature a moderated panel
discussion led
by Linda Krop, Chief Counsel at the Environmental Defense
Center, featuring
Assemblymembers Steve Bennett and Gregg Hart. They will reflect
on the legacy
of environmental action since the 1969 oil spill and examine the
impacts of oil
extraction and transport on water quality, the role of policy
and advocacy in
driving change, and the challenges and opportunities ahead. A
reception with
light refreshments will follow the discussion.

Learn more about the ES Internship course (ENVS 192) and two Research Opportunities (199 and 199RA) on their respective websites. 8) ENV LECTURE: “Developing for Justice:
Environmental
Justice Screening Tools” Kameron Kerger, Services and Systems
Design Lead,
Environmental Policy Innovation Center
- Mon, May 18 2026, 11am - 12pm, Bren Hall
1414
Environmental justice is the idea that all people and
communities have the
right to live and thrive in safe, healthy environments with
equal environmental
protections and meaningful involvement in actions and decisions
about their
environment and health. Environmental justice screening tools
can help identify
which communities experience disproportionate shares of
environmental, climate,
or socioeconomic burdens. In this talk, we will share
experiences and lessons
learned in developing one such tool, the Climate and Economic
Justice Screening
Tool (CEJST), which was used to identify communities where
investments from the
Justice40 Initiative could address existing environmental
injustices. We will
also share how these tools are and can evolve outside of the
federal context to
be more community led through discovery research, grassroots
engagement, and
participatory design practices.
Kameron has dedicated her career to one of
the most pressing
challenges in environmental governance: ensuring that
protections and
investments reach the communities that need them most. Her work
in developing
the Climate & Economic Justice Screening Tool represents an
excellent model
for how data-driven tools, grounded in participatory design and
grassroots
engagement, can translate justice commitments into measurable
outcomes.
