2)  UCSB ENV LECTURE: “Beyond Borders and Silos: Rethinking How Energy Policies Shape Water and Society” by  Newsha Ajami, Chief Strategy and Development Officer for Research, Earth and Environmental Sciences Area, Berkeley Lab
- Monday, February 9, 2026 | 11:00-12:00 in Bren Hall 1414

Water is the integral ingredient in both the food and energy systems, linking the sustainability of agriculture, energy production, human well-being, and ecosystem health. Despite this reality, much of our land use and energy policy is set without a clear valuation of water and under the assumption of abundance. Water is often traded across borders in the form of food and energy, based on economic measures, and with limited attention to local context and social impacts. As water scarcity intensifies worldwide, understanding these interconnections and managing tradeoffs across sectors and regions is essential. I will present a holistic framework that integrates environmental, economic and social data and maps tradeoffs and feedback loops within both local and cross-border policy contexts. I will illustrate how energy subsidies, regulatory frameworks, and population dynamics influence sustainability outcomes, social equity, and resource flows through two case studies: agricultural desalination in Baja California and across-border electricity exchange between multiple U.S. states and Mexico.

3) CHECK IT OUT!   The UCSB “Environment of it All” Podcast

Are you interested in getting involved in research at UCSB, or just curious about the exciting environmental research happening right on campus? The Environment of It All is a student-run podcast all about environmental science and sustainability at UCSB.

We interview professors, graduate students, and researchers to learn about their work, their stories, and how their research connects to everyday life. Listening to topics that interest you is a great way to get a feel for what research is like, how to get involved, and what careers in the field can look like.

Our most recent episode dives into industrial decarbonization with Aiden O’Niel. We’ve attached a Google Form and would love to hear your suggestions for future topics, labs, or researchers you’d like to hear from!
