Watch the recording of the Environmental Studies 42nd Steven Manley Memorial Lecture featuring Wade Crowfoot, CA Secretary of Natural Resources here. In this talk, Secretary Crowfoot discusses how California is leading global efforts to confront climate change, including the transition to carbon neutrality within the next 20 years and strategies to protect communities and natural landscapes from climate-driven disasters. He shared California Natural Resources Agency’s action framework, highlight key progress across the state, and outline areas where further scientific innovation and emerging leadership are essential to achieving an ambitious vision for the future.

CONTEXT:

1)  TODAY: Careers in Surface Water Panel Discussion hosted by the Hydrology Club at UCSB, May 20th, 5:30–6:30 PM in Bren 1414. RSVP here! 


Hear directly from professionals in consulting, nonprofit organizations, and water resources management about their careers, projects, and experiences working in surface water.


The panel will be held in Bren 1414 and will feature a moderator-led panel discussion in which each panelist will describe their educational background, professional experience, day-to-day responsibilities, and the types of projects they work on. Attendees can ask questions and gain insight into the wide range of career opportunities available in the field of surface water.

Panelists include:

  • Dr. Nicol Parker, PhD — Water resources practitioner at Geosyntec with experience applying contaminant modeling, monitoring, and data analysis to support regulatory compliance
  • Molly Troup, MS — Science & Program Manager at Santa Barbara Channelkeeper, where she develops and implements the organization’s advocacy and education programs
  • Dr. Tim Robinson, PhD — Senior Resources Scientist at the Cachuma Operation and Maintenance Board, managing Santa Ynez River fish and habitat plans in Santa Barbara

Following the discussion, a reception with pizza and refreshments will be held on the Bren patio (Decker's Deck).

2)  The UCSB Science Communication Club is holding our final workshop of the year

- May 20, 3:30 PM, at the UCSB The REEF!

 

Join us for an exciting event at The REEF, where you’ll learn how to communicate marine science in an aquarium setting! Scott Simon, Founder and Director of The REEF, and Dahlia Barranco, Content Coordinator Intern, will guide us through innovative teaching strategies and effective science communication techniques. Spend time with live sea creatures and get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at how The REEF operates.

Located at Campus Point Beach, The REEF is UCSB’s Teaching Aquarium and is Marine Science Institute’s Oceans-to-Classrooms (O2C) program. With hands-on touch tanks and aquaria, it brings marine science to life while aligning with Common Core and NGSS standards.

This will be structured with a presentation by our President, followed by an open floor for people to speak about their experiences as indigenous students on campus, as environmentalists, and the overlap of it all. The event will focus on NASA’s upcoming missions to the Moon, how national politics affects NASA’s funding, the Future of NASA, and the topics that students ask for as they register. There will also be a Q&A section for students to submit their questions to the NASA executives.

11)  Education Guide Opportunity with National Park Service in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Every Kid Outdoors 2026-2027 Education Guide part-time positions


We are reaching out to you today to start spreading the word on our upcoming Every Kid Outdoors 2026-2027 Education Guide part-time positions. These positions are open to current college students and recent graduates (within the last two years). Individuals that are selected will be gaining experience in the field of outdoor education and working with Title 1 4th Grade students from Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. Work will include participating in and presenting in both virtual and in-person outdoor educational experiences. To make this year another success, we are looking for a cohort of curious, passionate, and hard-working individuals.

 

Some things to note:

- We have not finalized logistics for the positions, but we are currently looking at these positions running for 30-32 weeks.

- In the past, we have had a mandatory commitment of 15 hours per week.

Education operations primarily run Tuesday through Friday.

- We are currently working on payment options for these positions.

 

- For those interested in applying to one of the open positions, they will need to email a resume and cover letter to samo_ed...@nps.gov

In the “Subject” line, type the following: EKO Education Guide Application_(First and Last Name)

- Applicants must be current college students or recent graduates

- Position is part-time, availability needed from September 2026 through May 2027
