CONTENT:

 

1)  Participating in a Summer Environmental Internship or Research Project with an ES Faculty Member?  If so, you are eligible to enroll for academic credit through ENVS 192, 199 and 199RA!

 

Even though these classes are not posted on GOLD, they do exist and you can earn credit through the following during UCSB Summer Sessions:

ENV INTERNSHIPS:  That’s right, if you’ve secured an environmental internship with an organization, local or non-local, you have the option to enroll in and earn academic credit through ENVS 192 over any of the available Summer Sessions.  Please visit the ENVS 192 Internship webpage to learn more and how to proceed and complete an ES Internship Proposal Form if you want to enroll in the class.  NOTE:  To earn ENVS 192 credit, one must enroll in UCSB Summer Sessions and regular summer fees will apply.

 

ENV INDEPENDENT STUDIES or RESEARCH ASSISTANT (ENVS 99, 199 and 199RA) is also available over the summer.  If you secure a ES faculty advisor to sponsor an independent studies project or you secure a position to assist an ES faculty member with their research, you can enroll in these courses.  More info about ENVS 99, 199, 199RA can be found on the ES Research webpage here. NOTE: one must enroll in UCSB Summer Sessions and regular summer fees will apply to earn credit through these courses.

3)  UCSB Zero Waste Committee Shoe & Sports Waste Recycling Drive

 

AS Zero Waste Committee is  getting ready to begin our end-of-year Shoe Recycling Drive. Our goal for this quarter is to collect over 750 pairs of sneakers from the UCSB, Isla Vista, Goleta, and Santa Barbara communities. So far, the program has displaced ~15,000 lbs of CO₂ and saved 1.2 million gallons of water .

 

UCSB Shoe Recycling will run from June 2nd – June 13th

BOXES IN: UCSB RECREATION CENTER and ALL ON-CAMPUS DORMS and IVCSD 'DONATION PICKUP SERVICE' FROM DOORSTEP


We’re also excited to introduce a new initiative: Dive into Sustainability, focused on aquatic/sports waste recycling. Collection for this will also be available in the Rec Center lobby

5)  2025 Environmental Leadership Incubator (ELI) student presentations
    - Friday, May 30th, 12:00-2:30 in Bren Hall 4016

The Environmental Leadership Incubator (ELI) is a nine-month program that trains undergraduate students to become environmental leaders.  It combines coursework and leadership skills training with project implementation around positive environmental change and mentorship by real world professionals.  Come join the 2025 ELI cohort at this capstone event where they will share their environmental leadership projects and year-long leadership development experiences. 6)  2025 ES Senior Thesis student presentations
    - Friday, June 6th, 8:30-4:30 in Bren Hall 4016


Time and time again, Environmental Studies alumni refer to the Senior Thesis course as the best course they could have ever taken. They cannot stress enough the important lessons learned from their experiences' writing their thesis. Today, ENVS 197 is an elective course which a cohort of 20-25 students participating in this daunting but rewarding endeavor.  23 students of the 2025 cohort will be presenting their thesis findings throughout the day and you're welcome to come listen and support these amazing students. 7)  ES Class of 2025 Celebration and Awards Presentation
    - Friday, June 13th, 3:30-5:00 in the Bren Hall Courtyard

 

At the conclusion of each academic year the Environmental Studies Program enjoys hosting a celebratory reception and awards presentation in honor of the year's graduating Environmental Studies seniors. If you're celebrating a ES student graduating this year we invite you to join us.  The 2025 student award winners and our Outstanding Alumnus and Community Service winners will be announced before the end of May.   See the ES Commencement webpage for regularly updated info.
