INDEX:
1) REMINDER: Winter Pass #1 Registration
Restriction
limiting access to add ES courses
to Declared ES and HYDRO majors only. If you’re not officially
declared an ES major
in GOLD, you will have to wait till Pass #2. The only
exception
is ENVS 3.
2) NEW ES CLASS ADDED FOR
WINTER: ENVS 104:
Environmental
Health, Inequality,
and Policy (will be posted on GOLD by Saturday morning)
3) REMINDER: ENVS 3 is offered this Winter
and ENVS 2 will
be in Spring, 2026.
These are
independent courses and don’t need to be taken sequentially. Nor
are
they prerequisites
for each other. It’s O.K. to take ENVS 3 and then ENVS 2 in the
Spring!
4) ENVS
70 – Intro to
Environmental Ethics, is being offered in Winter. This is a
great option to
fulfill the ES “Ethics and Justice” requirement as other options
are
not always
offered regularly (i.e. BLST 4, FEMST 50 or LING 50)
5) ATTENTION
ES B.S.
MAJORS: ENVS 193DS is
being offered this
Winter.
This is a popular option to satisfy the Area A UD Statistics
or Modeling requirement.
6) Review
list of Proposed
ES Courses for Spring 2026 to help with your
short and long-term class
planning. Download
the list here or see attached.

1) REMINDER: Winter Pass #1 Registration
Restriction
limiting access to add ES courses
to Declared ES and HYDRO majors only. If you’re not officially
declared an ES major
in GOLD, you will have to wait till Pass #2. The only
exception
is ENVS 3.
This is done to assure all declared ES majors have priority access to the ES classes they need to assure they graduate in a timely manner. Starting Pass #2 all ES courses will open to all majors and as long as there’s still open seats and one meets the course prerequisites, they can add ES courses then.
To learn more about how to officially declare ES or HYDRO as your official major visit the ES Webpage Declaring the ES major here. It contains all the requirements, qualifications, and procedure to declare ES as your major – which is done 100% online. Just follow the directions on this website and it can take up to a week to declare a single major and 2-3 weeks to have a double major request processed.
If you have questions about declaring ES as your major please contact the ES Advising team here.

2) NEW ES CLASS ADDED FOR
WINTER: ENVS 104:
Environmental Health, Inequality,
and Policy (will be posted on GOLD by Saturday morning)
4 units and taught by ES Professor Bhavna
Shamasunder,
Mellichamp Chair in Racially Just, Resilient & Sustainable
City Futures
Prerequisite: Upper-division
Standing
MW 930-1045 (ec:
63248)
Description: Course examines scientific and social scientific
approaches to environmental
health, with focus on systemic drivers of exposure across the life
course that
can impact population-level health. The first part of the course
introduces
students to core concepts of environmental epidemiology (social
and biological
cause of disease), toxicology (science of poisons), and policy
structures (i.e.
risk assessment). We then consider case studies such as
pesticides, consumer
products, and air pollution. A common thread across the course
considers how
cumulative exposures can vary among different population groups,
and the role
of social movement struggles in efforts to achieve environmental
health and
justice.
This course is a late addition and will be posted on GOLD by late
Friday or Saturday
morning at the latest!

independent courses and don’t need to be taken sequentially. Nor
are they prerequisites
for each other. It’s O.K. to take ENVS 3 and then ENVS 2 in the

ENVS 1, 2, 3 are all required for the ES major.
But they are
not prerequisites for each other, nor are they required to be
taken sequentially. It’s
o.k. to take ENVS 3 before ENVS 1 or 2.
Also be aware, ENVS 1, 2, and 3 are only offered once an academic year, plus in Summer School. The next time ENVS 3 will be offered is Summer 2026 and then Winter, 2027.

4) ENVS 70 – Intro to
Environmental Ethics, is being offered in Winter. This is a great
option to
fulfill the ES “Ethics and Justice” requirement as other options
are not always
offered regularly (i.e. BLST 4, FEMST 50 or LING 50)
Unfortunately, some of the other options for the “Ethics and Justice” requirement have not been offered for a number of quarters, and some are not scheduled to be offered at all in 2025-26. One of these is BLST 4, which has not been offered for going on two years. Please check your class schedules carefully and don’t pass up the opportunity to complete this requirement if ENV 70 or PHIL 4 or POL SCI 1 fit your schedule.
**************************************************************************
5) ATTENTION ES B.S.
MAJORS: ENVS 193DS is
being offered this
Winter. This is a popular
option to satisfy the Area A UD Statistics or modeling
requirement.
ENVS 193DS will fulfill the Area A Statistics requirement for all currently declared ES B.S. majors, regardless of your year’s major requirements. It will automatically apply to this requirement. This class is much easier to get into than the other options of GEOG 173, EEMB 146 or 179, or PSTAT 120A. Unfortunately, ENVS 164 (old 193SW) is not scheduled to be offered in 2025-26.
