This course combines a lab and discussion course on how science works and includes the analysis of research papers, science controversies, how science defines new areas of ignorance, and the observation of research group meetings.

2)  Winter 2026: COMM 187 - Data Science in Communication - OPEN TO ALL MAJORS

 

The Communication Department is participating in a campus-wide data science initiative and has opened COMM 187: Data Science in Communication to non-Communication majors during Pass 2.

 

About the Course: COMM 187 explores the role of data science in Communication and the Social Sciences. Students will engage with computational methods, Big Data, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence, while also examining ethical considerations, the social impact of technology, and data visualization. The course includes case studies drawn from Communication research.

 

Interested in Enrolling? Non-Communication majors may waitlist the course this week only in Pass 2! The department will select the top 20 non-Communication majors from the waitlist. Selected students will receive add codes on Monday, November 24th, and will have three days to enroll. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to @COMM Advising

3)  WINTER COURSE:  Interested in Indigenous Languages? Open Seats in LING 134!

 

We have open spots in LING 134: North American Indigenous Languages!

LING 134 provides a view of the richness and diversity of the languages indigenous to North America. Topics include their special sounds and sound patterns; vocabulary which can reflect the segmentation of experience into nameworthy concepts; distinctions revealed in grammar such as the categorization of persons, objects, and their roles; space and time; reality and evidence; as well as special forms of speech for special purposes; and verbal art. Also explored are methods for discovering genealogical relations among the languages, contacts among peoples, and aspects of prehistory. (The prerequisite of LING 20 will be waived for those with strong interest.)

6)  PAID LOCAL Permaculture and Gardening Internships with Ellwood Canyon Ranch

Ellwood Canyon Ranch is offering a 6+ month internship. This position is open to students and graduates but preferably those with prior experience in horticulture and/or agriculture. The weekly commitment is 8-10 hours at an entry rate of $18/hr. Interns will perform a variety of tasks including but not limited to composting, plant propagation, pruning, and garden planning. 7)  LOCAL INTERNSHIP for Winter Quarter:  Marketing Internship with Demo 2 Design – an architectural reUse program.

 

For more than 17 years, Demo 2 Design has provided UCSB students with the opportunity to demonstrate their theoretical knowledge by engaging with the practical application of promoting quality reclaimed building material reUse in our community through our Marketing Internship. Their contributions are significant; and together, we are making a difference in Santa Barbara...and beyond!  Please forward this flyer to your students; and any departments that you feel might benefit from this opportunity for their students.

 

As the commitment to construction material reUse continues to expand State-wide, eyes are on Santa Barbara to see the creative methods we are employing to engage builders in incorporating reclaimed material into new designs.  For the 6th year, My SBCC noncredit, FREE classes that earn a Sustainable Building certificate are available online as well as in person at the Wake Center;  and industry professionals throughout California are engaging in this reUse class.  Your students help update these classes.

 

This marketing internship offers a unique opportunity for students to experience practical application of theoretical knowledge with hands-on projects that stimulate creativity in many directions, now including Computer Engineering skills.  We are digitizing inventory to facilitate connecting construction material generators with recipient end-users via various platforms by expanding marketing reach.  Local deconstruction collaboration is making strides in diverting reclaimable building material from disposal at the landfill!

 

Internship:  Business Description

Demo 2 Design is a resource management business that promotes the behavior shift from

disposal to reUse by assessing, reclaiming, and marketing high-quality vintage architectural materials that add character to building projects. We research materials and markets; then connect doors, windows, flooring, lumber, plumbing & lighting fixtures from construction sites with end-users for reUse in designing new construction.

 

Students experience hands-on and online interaction. At the warehouse, they develop capability in photography, hand-tool techniques, spatial organization & display. Working remotely, they research materials; design graphics; digitize inventory & upload to platforms for market expansion; enhance website; and apply Google drive expertise to expanding the Sustainable Building class curricula.

 

Desirable skills include: social media, graphic design: Canva/PhotoShop, website design, Google/IT, photography, effective writing, spatial organization, industriousness, and environmental stewardship.

 

Responsibilities may include…

 Research items for pricing and industry-standard descriptions; update digital inventory

 Update D2D contacts in Google Sheets; design flyer graphics & format for mass emails

 Use spatial management to organize materials & set up photo shoots in warehouse

 Photograph materials to post online on social media & industry-specific platforms

 Update/organize video & website spreadsheets to facilitate access for class curricula

 Create Google Slide presentations for SBCC reUse classes & public venues

 Coordinate packing & shipping of materials

 Design digital forms for inventory assessment, contracts, and end-user wish lists

 

Time commitment

* Internship requires 60 hours for 2-unit certification; or 120 hours for 4 units

* Intern & staff agree on a workable schedule for both parties

* Hours of availability: Monday – Friday 10:00a – 6:00p (flexible); Saturday 11:00a– 3:00p

8)  Summer 2026 Research Opportunities with UCSB’s California Alliance for Minority Participation (CAMP) Summer Research Program


The Summer Research Program provides a 9-week intensive research experience for UCSB CAMP students interested in a career in science, engineering, technology or mathematics. Graduate student and postdoctoral researcher mentors provide one-on-one training and support for the research project. In addition to research, the interns also participate in weekly group meetings to develop oral presentation skills, attend special seminars and present their results at an end-of-summer poster session. 

 

Internship Awards:

 - The Summer CAMP program will run from June 15 - August 14, 2026.

 - The stipend for undergraduate interns is $6,000 total for 9 weeks (35 hours/week).

 - Internships will be awarded in all areas of science, technology, engineering or mathematics.

 - Students must be US Citizen/Permanent resident and enrolled at UCSB through Fall   2026.

They manage communication in its many forms (in person, by phone/email/text/instant message) and thrive in an office working environment with many dynamic interactions with staff, parents, and community members. They perform varied secretarial and administrative duties for the entire organization at our Santa Barbara office, M-F, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. 

Must be proficient in English/Spanish. Ability to conduct phone calls in Spanish and to work in person at WYP offices M-F is required.
