1). Dear ES majors still looking to enroll in EEMB 2L for Spring - Several spaces have opened up!
FROM THE BIO DEPT: Several spaces have opened up in EEMB 2LL for the Spring quarter. If you were planning to wait to take EEMB 2LL in the Fall quarter due to the long waitlist this Spring, we recommend you add yourself to the EEMB 2LL waitlist now for Spring 2026. There will be fewer labs offered in the Fall.
Sections will be closed for enrollment later today, so do not delay in adjusting your waitlist settings on GOLD.

2). Interesting UCSB course:
MUS 175P: Eco-acoustic arts. Eco-acoustic arts focuses on
responses to, and uses of environmental sounds in the broadest
framework of
soundscapes. Open to all students of upper division standing.
Spring 2026, Mondays 5–7.30pm ILP 3101
Instructor: Dr. Hellier, hel...@music.ucsb.edu
Open to all students of upper division standing.
Enrollment via an approval code after contacting the instructor.
No prerequisites.
No experience in musical practices or theories needed, but you do
need to be
open to new ideas and to working creatively, experimentally and
collaboratively.
We encompass a wide range of sound sources, specifically whales, birds, ice, oceans, rivers and trees, and we focus on processes of listening as active practice and creating new environmental sound art.
How can you develop creative sound art works and listening practices as forms of advocacy to communicate crucial aspects of ecological crisis?
Engaging with practices and philosophies of environmental sound and ecologies, and bringing together arts, humanities and sciences, you develop your analytical, intellectual and creative skills through listening fieldwork, analysis, reading/writing (public-facing and academic) and collaborative and individual creative arts/sounds projects.
This course combines:
- analysis of existing environmental sound art works
- conception and creation of new student environmental sound art
works
- discussion of intellectual, theoretical and public facing
readings
- preparation and presentation of public facing materials for
environmental
advocacy work.
Grading is based on: weekly notes and creative practice; class
discussions and
presentations; and creative projects.

5). UCSB ENV LECTURE: “How Degraded Corners of Campus Can
Become Keystones to Climate Adaptation and Coastal Resilience” by
Lisa
Stratton, Director of Ecosystem Management, UCSB Cheadle Center
for Biological
Diversity
- Monday, March 30, 2026 | 11:00-12:00 Bren Hall 1414
Sometimes solutions to problems become apparent when we think of
the problem in
a new way; a way that often involves letting go of underlying
assumptions that
we didn’t even realize that we were holding on to. Those
assumptions might
include a fixation on an engineered solution, or in holding on to
the status
quo for certain facilities or habitats, or considering solutions
that involve
multiple jurisdictions. UCSB’s Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and
Ecological
Restoration (Cheadle Center) is helping to solve campus and
community
vulnerabilities to climate change (e.g. flooding) by focusing on
enhancing
habitat quality and ecosystem function in areas that have been
altered by
actions taken 50 to 80 years ago. In that era, wetlands were
viewed as degraded
swamps harboring disease vectors and taking land out of
“productive use”. Now
those filled or altered wetlands are having impacts on adjacent
infrastructure
– like homes, airports and university campuses – and perspectives
are changing
about the value of these historic natural systems.
Lisa Stratton, Director of Ecosystem Management
for the
Cheadle Center, will share insights gained from the successful
restoration of
the upper arms of Devereux Slough (the North Campus Open Space
Restoration
Project), from an on-going planning effort for the UCSB Campus
Lagoon
resilience to sea level rise, and a newly initiated planning
project for the
Goleta Slough.

· learning from lecture
· reading efficiency
· test readiness
· focus
· fighting procrastination
· confronting confusion
· motivation
· academic confidence.
