1) Do you or your organization want to get involved in this year’s UCSB Earth Month? You are invited!
Building on UCSB and the greater Santa Barbara community’s long-standing legacy with Earth Day and environmental leadership, UCSB Earth Month is an opportunity for the UCSB, Isla Vista, and Goleta communities to come together to learn, engage, and make a tangible impact on our local environment. The campaign will be realized through collaborations with Associated Students organizations, UCSB Sustainability, UCSB faculty, the Isla Vista Community Services District (IVCSD), and individual student-led projects.
UCSB Earth Month is tentatively scheduled to take place from April 11-26. Each week will be centered on a different theme: Waste & Climate Change, Water Use/Pollution, & Nature. Events, programming, and the accompanying educational outreach campaign will be aligned with each theme to create a cohesive and intentional experience throughout the month.
How you can take action:
Please complete this Google Form if you or your organization is interested in participating in UCSB Earth Month. Completion of this form is required for participation and will support effective planning, communication, and collaboration.
In addition, there will be a UCSB Earth Month Town Hall on Friday, January 16th, from 12:00–1:00 PM for all registered participants. UCSB Earth Month is intended to be a collaborative, community-driven effort, and your participation and perspective are greatly valued.

3) UCSB EVENT: Special screening and
discussion of Pistachio Wars. “Yasha Levine as he
investigates a small-town water deal and uncovers a hidden side of
California’s health-food industry.” - Tuesday, January 27, 2026 at
7:00 PM at UCSB's Pollock Theater.
From directors Yasha Levine and Rowan Wernham, the film will be presented in a one-night-only free screening event.
Pistachio Wars (2024) follows journalist
Yasha Levine as he investigates a small-town water deal and
uncovers a hidden side of California’s health-food industry. At
the center is the agricultural empire of America’s wealthiest
farmers, Stewart and Lynda Resnick of the Wonderful Company
(Wonderful Pistachios, POM Wonderful, and Fiji Water). These
billionaires dominate California’s pistachio industry, but more
importantly, own much of the state’s water, more than the entire
city of Los Angeles. The Resnicks’ desert plantations have drained
rivers, disrupted ecosystems, and polluted water quality for many
communities throughout the state. To frame the story of the
Resnicks, filmmakers Levine and Wernham trace how California built
its water system in ways that ultimately enabled big agribusiness
to command control. Pistachio Wars reveals how the hidden
world of industrial agriculture fuels the state’s growing climate
injustices, from worsening droughts to increasingly destructive
megafires.
Filmmakers Yasha Levine and Rowan Wernham will join moderator Rich
Farrell (Film and Media Studies, UCSB) for a post-screening
discussion of Pistachio Wars.

9) Looking for Emerging
Conservation Leaders! UCSC Conservation Leadership Immersion
(CLIME) Program. $10,800 stipend for living expenses and housing.
- Applications are due February 1, 2026
Applications for the University of California Santa Cruz
Conservation Leadership Immersion Program (conservationleadership.ucsc.edu) are
due February 1, 2026. We would like to enlist your help reaching
prospective Scholars using the attached materials, social media
posts, and our website. Our goal is to serve students from groups
with ideas, perspectives and experiences traditionally
underrepresented in conservation who can contribute to broadening,
redefining, and strengthening efforts to protect land, wildlife,
and water.
In March we will select 8 undergraduate Scholars from around the
country to participate in a two-week conservation immersion
program followed by an 8-week summer internship. Each Scholar
receives a $10,800 stipend for living expenses and housing.
The beginning of the program (May 31 - June 13, 2026) starts with
a two-week, immersive field course on conservation practice,
leadership, and ecological research on UC Natural Reserves from
the coast to the mountains in Central California. For the
remainder of the summer (June 15 - August 8, 2026), Scholars
pursue eight-week research and practice internships with
nationally recognized research labs or conservation organizations.
Professional development workshops during Fall 2026 prepare
Scholars to apply for jobs and graduate school. In summer 2027,
Scholars will attend a national research conference. Throughout
the program, we work with each Scholar to provide ongoing
mentoring support that continues past program completion as
alumni, and they join a nationwide alumni network for peer support
and professional networking.
We serve all students who can study in the United States without a visa (including citizens, nationals, residents, refugees, DACA, undocumented, and more) and who are currently juniors or seniors at a 4-year college or university. We highly encourage applicants from groups whose ideas, perspectives, and experiences are underrepresented in environmental conservation to apply. Visit our FAQ for more questions about eligibility and criteria.
Applications are now available and will close at 11:59 pm on Sunday, February 1, 2026.
Please find attached flyer. For more information, visit conservationleadership.ucsc.edu or email us
at scho...@ucsc.edu.
