CONTENT:
1) ENV SEMINAR: “Deploying Science in
Post-Disaster Decision
Making: Lessons from the 2025 Los Angeles Fires” by Megan
Mullin, Professor of
Public Policy, UCLA
- Monday, May 4, 2026, 11 am – 12 pm on Bren Hall 1414
The dominant narrative that emerges after disasters emphasizes
rapid rebuilding
to a community’s previous state. Following the devastating 2025
fires in Los
Angeles, an alternative narrative focused on rebuilding not just
quickly but
with recognition of the region’s endemic fire risk and the
climate change
contribution to that risk. This talk describes UCLA’s
partnership with the
Blue Ribbon Commission on Climate Action and Fire-Safe
Recovery in
developing policy recommendations for resilient rebuilding. It
explores the
opportunities and challenges in bringing together three forms of
expertise—scientific knowledge, practitioner knowledge, and
local knowledge—to
inform recovery in the highly dynamic political aftermath of a
disaster.

2) ENV LECTURE: The
Environmental
Studies 42nd Steven Manley Memorial Lecture
Featuring California’s Secretary of Natural Resources, Wade

"Confronting Crises: Helping People and Nature Thrive in the Age

reception) -
FREE
RSVP's are not required to attend, but
appreciated to help
determine attendance size at the reception.
In this talk, Secretary Crowfoot will discuss how California is
leading global
efforts to confront climate change, including the transition to
carbon
neutrality within the next 20 years and strategies to protect
communities and
natural landscapes from climate-driven disasters. He will share
the California
Natural Resources Agency’s action framework, highlight key
progress across the
state, and outline areas where further scientific innovation and
emerging
leadership are essential to achieving an ambitious vision for
the future.
Attached is a flier for this lecture and feel free to pass it
along to anyone
who might be interested in attending this talk.

5) REMINDER:
Applications
due for next year’s ENVS 195A: Environmental Leadership
Incubator course by May
4th at 10 am!
Have you ever wanted to make a real difference in the world? To develop your leadership skills? To learn how to inspire and motivate a group of people? If yes, then consider applying for the Environmental Leadership Incubator (ELI).
ELI is a nine-month, six-unit program designed to mentor UCSB undergraduates through the leadership process, from the conception of an idea through to its implementation. The program starts with a fall quarter course (ENVS 195A W/F 12:30-1:45 pm) which is aimed at helping you develop your leadership skills and formulate a plan for your environmental leadership project. In the winter and spring quarters (ENVS 195B and ENVS 195C), you or your team make that project a reality, with the guidance of an expert mentor and the ELI Program Manager. ELI concludes at the end of spring quarter with Capstone Presentations.
Apply for ELI here. Application review begins on Monday, May 4th at 10 am.
Find more information about the ELI program and application process.

8) Wild Rockies Field
Institute announces new sliding-scale tuition model for our fall
2026 quarter
program, Montana Afoot & Afloat this Fall
quarter!
This model adjusts course tuition based on a student’s household income, with the goal of reducing financial barriers to participation in field-based, experiential education.
Gain a holistic picture of Montana’s landscapes, ecosystems, and geography by tracing the path of water in Montana’s dramatic landscape from headwaters high up in the mountains to flood plains in valleys that host important wildlife and communities alike. Students on this course will gain an integrated understanding of future, past, and present relationships between the human communities and landscapes that characterize Montana’s rich and diverse geography and is designed to give students the experiences and academic background to formulate a personal land ethic – that is, a vision of a wise and beneficial way to relate to the land.
This initial rollout will be a pilot program,
and we
hope to adopt it across our six other courses for the 2027 field
season. We
recognize that cost is often a determining factor in whether
students pursue
off-campus or field-based programs. This pilot is one step
toward making these
opportunities more accessible to a broader range of students,
particularly
those who have been historically underrepresented in outdoor and
experiential
education.
