4) SOC 146 – Urban
Environment
– is willing to allow a certain number of ES majors to enroll in
the class this
Winter!
This course maps out the social, cultural, and political history of the relationship between the urban built environment and the natural environment as they have
changed over time in California. While readings and lectures will provide the broader context, students will engage in hands-on research and writing-
intensive assignments each week. Students will learn how to create and conduct a case study, connect specific cases to questions in urban and environmental sociology, and compare cases between various student projects. Students will choose cases from a list of urban development and land conservation sites in
California and will conduct weekly independent historical and qualitative research that focuses on urban and environmental planning, policy, and
activism, and be prepared to discuss the materials each week. The class will incorporate lectures, occasional visiting speakers, and broader discussions of sociological research and methods. We will work toward a final project in which students display and discuss their research in a poster session.
NOTE: Interested students will need to reach
out to Prof.
Deener directly < ade...@soc.ucsb.edu>
for an approval code if they are not a SOC double major, since the
course is
restricted to SOC and PRE-SOC students. Be sure to let them know
you’re
majoring in ES!
