2) Help Monitor Local Marine Protected Areas – Virtual Training workshop on Tuesday, January 20th, 5:30 – 6:30 pm
Attend a virtual training workshop to learn about and help monitor our Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) as part of Channelkeeper's MPA Watch Program.Santa Barbara Channelkeeper is looking for volunteers to help us record and track human activities in and adjacent to Santa Barbara's Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) through our MPA Watch program at Campus Point (IV/Ellwood), Naples, and Gaviota State Beach. MPA Watch volunteers walk along the beach at designated transects to observe and collect unbiased data on coastal and marine resource use, which provides important information to understand how people are using the marine protected areas (MPAs) and to help inform MPA management.Becoming an MPA Watch volunteer is easy, fun, and a great opportunity for undergraduate students to gain experience with data collection protocols. MPA Watch surveys are conducted independently and take about 20 minutes per survey. We ask volunteers to commit to conducting at least 3 surveys per month. Join Channelkeeper for the upcoming virtual training workshop. This workshop will be followed by a one-hour outdoor field training session held at Campus Point Beach on a future date.**************************************************************************
3) Take Back the Tap is a campus program dedicated to creating awareness about water quality standards and reducing single-use plastic water bottle consumption. Our mission is to emphasize the importance of water as a human right and build trust in state and national water safety regulations.
We are hosting the second round of our tap water testing initiative this quarter to help students learn more about local water quality and clear skepticism surrounding tap water consumption. The event will be taking place on Sunday January 18, from 11a.m. -1p.m. at the IV Food Coop Patio. Students are encouraged to bring a sample of their apartment tap water to better understand its safety and quality.
In addition, we are hosting a Rethink Your Drink Game Day on Wednesday January 21, from 1 p.m.-3p.m at the SRB Multipurpose Room. This is a fun and collaborative event with various on campus environmental organisations coming together to set up games that echo the idea of making healthier consumer choices that are better for our bodies and our planet.
The aim of these events is to make individuals aware of their water rights and public health utilities, subjects that can be of relevance to environmental science students interested in public health advocacy and environmental justice.

5) SBWCN seeks wildlife rehabilitation interns who are passionate
about wildlife and are fueled by a desire to save lives. Interns will learn and practice all aspects of animal husbandry for wildlife that are sick, injured, orphaned, or oil-impaired. Although wildlife rehabilitation interns will sometimes interact with the veterinary team, this is not a veterinary internship.
The Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network is a nonprofit organization that has been rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing wildlife in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties for over 30 years. It is the mission of our organization and our professional wildlife care staff to give wild animals in need a second chance at life.
