3) Fall Quarter –
Seminar in Plant Ecology & Evolution
We’re writing to let you know of an undergraduate/graduate seminar that we’re offering in Fall quarter so that you may enroll in GOLD after contacting us to express your interest and receiving an approval code. This once-a-week, 2-unit seminar is a great match for you if you’re curious about plants as the cornerstones of our food supply, agricultural innovation, support for pollinators (and herbivores), sources of medicine, and biological diversity.
Through our discussions (and your presentations) of the book, The History of the World in 100 Plants, you’ll increase your knowledge, understanding, and ability to persuade others of the crucial ways in which human survival, health, and well-being depend on the survival, health, and sustainability of plants.
Your primary assignments for this class will be:
(1) to read the chapters on the selected species each week;
(2) to select one of the plants described in the book (two species for graduate students) and to investigate its ecological interactions, habitat, phylogeny, and importance to people; and
(3) to share your findings about your selected species in one ~20-minute low key, informal, oral presentation (two for graduate students).
When we offered this seminar in fall 2024, we were delighted by the high quality of every student’s presentation and delivery – it was an incredible quarter.
If you’re interested in joining us, please read
the
attached flyer carefully and contact us as requested at the bottom
of the
flyer. We keep the class size small so that everyone gets to know
each
other! Class size is limited, so please contact us soon if the
seminar
appeals to you.
