1) Spring Grading Option Reminder & Info: ALL classes taken to fulfill ANY ES and HYDRO major requirements must be taken for letter grade. Check your grading options on GOLD to make sure they are set properly before the deadline of Friday, June 7th!
Many courses offer the option of "optional grading," allowing you to choose between receiving a letter grade or a "passed/not passed" (P/NP) when registering for the course on GOLD. If you opt for P/NP and acheive a grade of at least a C, you will "Pass" the course and earn units. However, if you earn a C- or lower, will have "Not Passed" the course and will not receive units. P/NP courses will have no impact on your GPA.
BEWARE: All
courses
that apply to a major or for a minor must be taken for a letter
grade. This
includes pre-major courses, course in the preparation for a major,
and upper
division major courses, including the Area C Outside
Concentration.
The only exception is for courses that are ONLY offered Pass/No
Pass, such as
ENVS 190, ENVS 192, and some courses in other departments one
might use for
their Area C.
If you have any questions about your major requirements email advi...@es.ucsb.edu
right away!
Other things to note:
- 120 or two-thirds of your UCSB units must be taken or a letter
grade, the
remaining 1/3 may be taken P/NP.
- If you are taking a course Passed/Not Passed, a grade of C- will become a grade of NP on your transcript. With a grade of NP, you may save your GPA but lose units; with a grade of C-, you will earn units but you may harm your GPA.
- You must complete a minimum of 60 letter-graded University of California units to graduate with honors, high honors, or highest honors.
- Pre-law students should note that the Law School Data Assembly Service (LSDAS) will calculate a grade of NP as an F when considering applicants for admission into their program. We recommend that pre-law students discuss their options with a pre-law advisor before choosing the P/NP option for a course.
- ICA Athletes should always check with their
Athletic
Academic Advisor to ensure there are no eligiblity issues when
changing the
grading option.
More info about Pass/No Pass courses is available on the L&S
Advising website.

2) NEW ES CLASS ADDED
to Summer Session A: ENVS
137 -
Conservation Planning - now OPEN on GOLD!
Although ES had to cancel a Summer Session B course (ENVS 149) we are excited to share that we have successfully secured funding and an instructor to add ENVS 137 to Summer Session A. This class is now posted and open on GOLD for registration. As it both applies as a general ES Area B elective and a Area B-1 (science) elective for ES B.S. majors, we hope this class will offer you some additional options. See GOLD to officially add the class.
If you have any questions please email advi...@es.ucsb.edu
