NEWS IN ES:

UCSB Current Article:  Bren School leadership program highlights mentorship and student research!”  The Bren Environmental Leadership (BEL) program saw more than a dozen pairs of undergraduate (many ES majors) and graduate students team up for an intensive 10-week paid fellowship to network, workshop and produce special projects in their respective fields, from marine biology and agricultural practices to social justice and pollution reduction…. Among the BEL presenters, third-year environmental studies major Halia Fleming and mentor Caroline Smith, who is pursuing a masters degree with an emphasis in coastal resource management, will discuss their efforts to establish a baseline of marine mammal species that feed, migrate or live year round in the newly designated 4,543-square-mile Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary. See the complete article here.  Applications for the BEL program for Undergraduates will become available early Spring, 2026!

1)  Winter 2026 ENVS Schedule Update:  ENVS 190 has moved from Spring to Winter, 2026!  The class will NOT be taught in Spring, so if you still need it, take it now!

Normally, ENVS 190 is offered twice a year, in Fall and Spring quarters.  But in 2025-26 it is being taught in Fall 25 and Winter 2026.  It will not be offered in Spring 2026 and the next time it will be taught is Fall 2026.  So if you need this required seminar to graduate this year, plan to take it in Winter 2026!

Please RSVP here.  Zoom link - https://ucsb.zoom.us/j/83272808237

On behalf of the Chancellor’s Sustainability Committee, we are pleased to share our draft Climate Action Plan (CAP).  The 2025 CAP assesses and analyzes UCSB’s current, historical, and projected emissions and evaluates the campus’s progress toward meeting the UC Climate Policy.  Planned and conceptual climate change mitigation strategies are outlined in the plan and provide a potential pathway towards achieving the 90% reduction in total emissions by calendar year 2045 from a 2019 baseline.

The plan also addresses climate resilience and how we can prepare our campus community for future climate conditions. And opportunities for the campus to serve as a “living laboratory” for climate action and sustainability.

This 1-hour session will be held via Zoom on November 5, beginning at 3:00 pm PDT

10)  UCSB Coastal Fund Fall Minor Grant Applications Due Soon!
- 8 PM Friday November 7th, 2025

As a reminder, here are our deadlines for Fall quarter:
Minor ($1000 or less) Application Deadline-
8 PM Friday November 7th, 2025

The Coastal Fund (CF) is a student initiative dedicated to the conservation of the UCSB coastline. Our student body recognizes that the coast is at the heart of our campus’ culture and character and must be protected. In response, each undergraduate student contributes $5.75 per quarter, and each graduate student $3.00 per quarter, into a fund that provides over $450,000 each year to protect and enhance our coastline. Since Fall of 1999, the Fund has allocated over $5 million to countless local projects or programs. The Coastal Fund accepts proposals during three funding cycles throughout the year (one per academic quarter) and critically reviews them for consistency to the CF Mission Statement vision and principals, relevance to the student community, adherence to UCSB and Regental policy and benefit to the UCSB shoreline.

Learn more about the UCSB Coastal Fund Grant Program here.

If you have any questions about an application or want to discuss an idea before submitting a full proposal, feel free to contact coast...@as.ucsb.edu or our advisor Sarah at sar...@as.ucsb.edu.
