Trees: Week 2 Events
Your Children’s Trees at UCSB is a campus organization conducting native species restoration and planting projects throughout the community. We are dedicated to educating the public about the benefits of urban forests and the importance of planting native trees in our communities. We are also part of a broader community non-profit, Your Children’s Trees, which provides urban forestry educational and technical support to the Santa Barbara County area.
Our events for this week are as follows:

Opportunity in Renewable Energy Development with US Renewables
The US Renewables Internship Program provides undergraduate students with an
opportunity to support active utility-scale solar and battery energy storage development
while gaining exposure to land acquisition, permitting, environmental analysis, and
leadership disciplines that define the industry. Pay will be $25/hr.

Program Objectives
Interns in the USR program will:
• Gain hands-on experience using GIS tools, and policy research.
• Support active developers in conducting environmental reviews, jurisdictional
research, and site feasibility assessments.
• Build leadership habits based on USR’s internal values: clarity, discipline,
accountability, and communication.
• Develop professional skills in writing, presenting, data management, and
stakeholder communication.
Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for the US Renewables Internship Program, applicants must:
• Be enrolled as an undergraduate (preferably Geography, Environmental Studies, or
related fields).
• Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
• Demonstrate interest in renewable energy, sustainability, climate policy, or energy
markets.
• Possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Be comfortable working independently in a fast-moving environment.
Preferred Skills
Applicants with the following skills will be given priority consideration:
• Experience with GIS / spatial data tools (ArcGIS, QGIS, Google Earth Pro).
• Familiarity with renewable energy technologies and terminology.
• Basic understanding of energy policy, land-use regulation, or environmental
permitting.
• Analytical research capability.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Ability to synthesize complex information and communicate it clearly.
Core Competencies Developed During Internship
Interns will develop proficiency in:
1. Land & Site Control Basics
• Understanding landowner dynamics
• Reviewing parcel maps and zoning classifications
2. Environmental & Permitting Processes
• CEQA, NEPA, and local permitting pathways
• Environmental fatal flaw screening
3. Community Relationship Preparation
• Understanding the role of community benefit programs
4. Professional Leadership Skills
• Writing concise development memos
• Communicating updates clearly
• Practicing the USR leadership cadence: Move, Read, Teach, Learn, Write
Responsibilities of Internship Participants
Interns will support active projects through:
• Compiling geographic and environmental data for development sites
• Performing county-by-county permit research
• Building standardized project summaries
• Supporting due diligence tasks
• Creating maps, tables, and internal development packets
• Shadowing developers during meetings (when appropriate)
• Preparing status reports and presenting findings to USR leadership
Time Commitment
• Internship Duration: 10 weeks
• Expected Time Commitment: 8–12 hours per week
• Flexible scheduling to accommodate academic responsibilities
• Weekly check-ins with USR supervisors
• Final presentation at the end of the internship summarizing contributions
Evaluation Criteria
Performance will be evaluated based on the following:
• Quality of research and analysis
• Clarity and professionalism of communication
• Consistency and reliability
• Timeliness in completing assignments
• Demonstrated growth in leadership skills
• Contribution to active project work
• Engagement with the USR team and willingness to learn
Exceptional interns may be offered extended opportunities or invited to return in future
cycles.

UCSB Coastal Fund
Undergraduate Outreach Coordinator Opportunity
The Coastal Fund Outreach and Administrative Coordinator provides assistance to Board members and the Environmental Programs Advisor by running the Coastal Fund Instagram accounts and monthly newsletter, taking minutes at weekly meetings, managing follow-up communication with funding recipients including progress check ins, final reports and receipts, and by acting as the lead organizer for the Coastal Fund end-of-year celebration.
The individual in this position will be trained in Spring quarter by our graduating outreach coordinator and is expected to be fully ready to take the lead in Fall 2026 through at least the full 26-27 academic year. Approximately 8 hours per week, $16.90 per hour. Most hours are flexible but the selected student must be available for Coastal Fund board meetings every Tuesday night from 6pm to approximately 9:30pm for weeks 1-9 of each quarter.

Barbara’s Pilgrim Terrace Compost/Regenerative Agriculture
Internship
Pilgrim Terrace Nonprofit is looking for students interested in sustainability, soil science, and regenerative agriculture. Composting is a key component of maintaining soil health for our urban farm, which provides fresh produce and supports nutrition programs serving low-income seniors, families, and students in the Santa Barbara community. Interns will help us build and manage compost piles, test compost effectiveness in the garden, and assist with outreach to promote compost to local gardeners.
Schedule & Commitment:
- Prep Day: Every other Thursday, 8–11 am (includes collecting materials and prep work)
- Build Day: Every other Friday, 8–11 am (assembling compost piles)
- Ongoing: Compost care & moisture checks (flexible schedule, occasional weekends)
- Approx. 6–10 hours/week during the school year
This is a hands-on opportunity to gain experience in soil science, sustainable food systems, and regenerative agriculture. Course credit may be available.
