UCSB’s General Chemistry laboratory
series starting Fall quarter!
One needs to finish
1AL, 1BL, 1CL labs by next Winter or
else students have to take both the new CHEM
2AL and CHEM 2BL labs!
We want to inform you the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is in the process of phasing out the General Chemistry laboratory series (CHEM 1AL, CHEM 1BL, and CHEM 1CL).
Changes to the lecture series (CHEM 1 Series):
Starting fall 2024, discussion sections will be introduced to CHEM 1A, increasing its units from 3.0 to 4.0. However, the units for CHEM 1B and CHEM 1C will remain at 3.0 without discussion sections.
Changes to the laboratory series (CHEM 1L Series):
The current three-quarter CHEM 1L series will be replaced by a new two-quarter CHEM 2L series, as detailed in the table below. The CHEM 2L series will run independently of the chemistry lecture series, meaning students enrolled in CHEM 1A in fall will begin their laboratory courses in winter. This adjustment allows students to complete a year's worth of General Chemistry laboratory courses in two quarters.
If you have completed the entire series, this change will not affect you.
However, if you have not completed the entire series, we highly recommend that you try to finish these courses before they are discontinued. Below is the schedule for the remaining offerings of these courses:
Academic Term Courses Offered
Summer 2024 CHEM 1BL, CHEM 1CL
Fall 2024 CHEM 1BL, CHEM 1CL
Winter 2025 CHEM 1CL
Please note that you can be enrolled in both CHEM 1BL and CHEM 1CL
at the same
time. Failure to complete the entire series will require you to
take additional General Chemistry
laboratory courses in the new CHEM 2L series,
which will
replace the CHEM 1L series. Depending on the courses you have
completed, you may need to
take an additional two quarters of laboratory courses. If you
anticipate being in
this situation, please be sure to speak with your major
undergraduate advisor.

We are confident the class will be full by the time Pass #3 opens in Early September – after all the new Freshman have had a chance to add the class during orientation! So don’t wait till Pass #3 to add the class.

3) MANY REQUIRED ES
COURSES ARE ONLY OFFERED ONCE A YEAR. Here’s a list of Fall
courses you should consider
as many are prerequisites for other ES courses:
All of the courses listed below are only offered once during the academic year (few are repeated in summer). Many are either required for your major (i.e. ENVS 1 and 60) or are prerequisites to take more advanced courses in the next quarter. Be sure to look at all these courses and make sure you don’t miss out on the opportunity to take them now. You should also visit the ES 2024-25 Proposed Schedule of Courses to help prepare and select your ES courses for the 2024-25 academic year!

6) ALL ES MAJORS SHOULD
TAKE ENV S 190 IN THE FALL! The theme for the Fall Colloquium is
“Intro to Environmental
Careers” what they are, how to choose one, and what UCSB resources
you may
use to better prepare for life after graduation.
The topic is designed to help you think about your career interests and how to achieve your desires. The sooner you take this class the more time you will have to apply the knoeweledge and skills you gain while still at UCSB! Some of the topics covered include: Introduction to Environmental Careers in the 21st Century; Self-Assessment: Choosing the Right Career for the Right Reasons; Second Half of your Education: Internships, Research, Studying Abroad, etc.; Secrets to a Successful College Career and Beyond; Intro to UCSB’s Career Services, Resumes & Cover Letters; Attending Graduate School: Why, When, and How; and Guest ES Alumni Who Will Talk About Their Environmental Careers.
Env S 190 is a one-unit, P/NP only, course with
no
perquisites and is open to all UCSB students and class levels
(including first
year). Registered students are expected to attend ALL lectures,
complete a
couple short exercises regarding your personal goals and
experiences, and
complete a Résumé and Cover Letter assignment - all designed to
help you
better understand the resources available at UCSB and help you
prepare for life
after graduation. No midterm or final. Just attend the lectures
and do a few
self-help exercises and lecture reviews!
See attached flier!
Here are some quotes from students who have taken this class:
ES 190 offered this quarter put a face and voice to what everyone wants to know as an undergraduate in regards to their working future after college
Every time I walked out of this class I felt some encouragement that I was finally figuring out my path in college.
The focus of this class has not only given me insight on environmental careers, but also has given me a smoother transition to understand what is expected as a college student.

7) CLASS SCHEDULING
TOOL: Use the ES 2024-25
Proposed
Schedule of Courses to help prepare and select your ES
courses for the
2024-25 academic year!
This is a helpful tool for preparing one’s short-term Fall as well
as
longer-term 2024-25 class schedule!
Just
beware, although this list of courses is the most up-to-date for
the coming
year – it is not set in stone and schedule changes may still occur
prior to the
start of each quarter.
See attached or download it from the ES Courses
webpage.

8) SPECIAL SCHEDULE NOTE: In 2024-25 Environmental
Studies will be
offering ENVS 3 in the Winter and ENVS 2 in the Spring quarter. One is not required to take
these sequentially
and you can take them out of order.
Both
are also being offered in Summer 2024 if you wish to take them
then!
Normally these classes have been taught ENVS 1 (Fall), ENVS 2 (Winter) and ENVS 3 (spring). But for the 2024-25 academic year (and possible in future years) we are switching when we offer ENVS 2 and 3 as noted above. As all courses are not required to be taken sequentially and have no prerequisites, you can take ENVS 3 in the Winter 2025 and then ENVS 2 in the spring with no issues.
All three of the ENVS 1, 2, 3 courses are also scheduled to be offered in 2024 UCSB Summer Sessions.
