1) UCSB Greenhouse
Horticulture
Internship: Fall 2025
If you are passionate about growing plants, and want to learn more
about botany
and horticulture, then apply for the ES192/EEMB 184 Horticulture
Internship offered at the UCSB Biology Greenhouses this Fall 2025.
The internship will introduce students to horticulture using plants in the greenhouse teaching collection, research projects and campus grounds. The topics students will learn include: nutrient
and environmental requirements, transplanting, diagnosing and treating pests and diseases, and propagation. We will cover aspects of botany that are important for communicating and
understanding horticulture, as well as basic systematics and botanical terminology. The intern will apply this knowledge to enhance the greenhouse collections and will have opportunities to practice sharing their knowledge with a small group of peers. They will also learn about research being conducted at the greenhouses and assist with basic greenhouse upkeep.
Weekly Commitment:
~5 hours total (1 unit). One 3-hour shift at the greenhouses, 10-20 minutes of web-based or project-related assignments, and a weekly 1-2 hour meeting (time TBD) with the Greenhouse Manager to discuss the weekly topic. Greenhouse shifts will be conducted on an established schedule between the hours of 8AM and 5PM.
Required Qualifications:
• Willingness to work in dirty, dusty, and damp areas
• Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
• Interest in botany and horticulture
To Apply:
Prepare a statement explaining your motivation to take the internship, relevant botanical experiences & interests (including coursework and activities outside of school), and what you will contribute. Email the statement as an attached document, and include your major, year, and a resume or CV. Send your statement to Greenhouse Manager Cameron Hannah-Bick before September 8th
(chann...@ucsb.edu). We will respond to all applications, but enrollment will be limited to ~8 students. The greenhouse shift and the weekly meeting time will be determined through a poll after we have chosen the interns.

2) UCSB Fall 2025
Mazer Lab/Plant Architecture Lab Internship for anyone interested
in botany
research, and want to gain hands-on experience in plant science
If you are interested in botany research, and want to gain
hands-on experience
in plant science, then apply for the ES192/EEMB 194 Mazer Lab
internship
offered Fall 2025.
Project Abstract: Rising global temperatures and increasingly erratic precipitation associated with climate change have reduced environmental stability and increased drought stress for many plant species. The impact of drought on widespread annual plants can be explored in xeric Mediterranean habitats that already select for drought resistance, i.e. the drought escape strategy, (where plants escape drought by completing their life cycle ahead of extreme summer water deficits). In annual species, which do not reserve photosynthates and nutrients for subsequent seasons, architectural traits can be significantly correlated with reproductive traits and fitness. By measuring annual plant architecture in extreme habitats that select for specific life history strategies, we can explore how populations adapt to stress, and the plasticity of their phenotypic responses. The influence of long-term chronic conditions (spatial variation) and short-term environmental conditions (temporal variation), on phenology and architecture can be readily explored in Clarkia unguiculata, a widespread Californian wildflower which tends to flower late into seasonal summer drought. Using seeds collected from xeric and mesic populations, grown in a common greenhouse experiment with high and low moisture treatments, we will measure architectural, phenological, & reproductive traits. Exploring how past drought can influence selection and phenotypic plasticity can help us predict how plants may respond to future droughts, which can inform ecological restoration practices to bolster the resilience of annual wildflowers facing the Anthropocene.
Weekly Commitment:
Students are expected to complete ~5 hours of work a week for 1 unit:
• 3-hour shift working either in the lab or at the greenhouses to grow, pollinate, and collect data from experiment
• 1-hour weekly group meeting to understand the research and learn about the project
• ~1-hour of readings or at home web-based data entry
Required Qualifications:
• Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
• Interest in plant science
• Time to reliably commit to a weekly schedule
• Willingness to work in both indoor laboratory and greenhouse environments
• Ability to follow instructions carefully and work independently or as part of a team
To Apply:
Prepare a statement explaining your motivation to join the lab and your relevant botanical experiences and interests (including coursework and activities outside of school), and what you will contribute. Email the statement as an attached document, and include your major, year and a resume or CV. Send your statement to PhD student Cameron Hannah-Bick before September 9th (chann...@ucsb.edu). I will respond to all applications, but enrollment will be limited to ~10 students. The work shift and weekly meeting time will be determined through a poll after we have chosen the interns

4) Environmental
Organizing Fellowship Opportunities with Green Corps Organizer
Program - The
Field School for Environmental Organizing
This is Casey Gallagher with Green Corps, the Field School for Environmental Organizing. I'm a 2024 UCSB Environmental Studies graduate, and I’m looking to get the word out to graduating seniors at UCSB about our paid training program in environmental organizing. Feel freee to email Casey is you have any questions <cgall...@greencorps.org>
Green Corps is looking for college graduates who are ready to take on the biggest environmental challenges of our day. Learn more and apply on our website!
The planet needs all the help it can get. To win now and build a strong foundation for lasting progress, we need people who know how to organize: to run organizations and campaigns that will inspire the support and action we need to save our environment. Our program starts with intensive classroom training. You learn about issues and campaigns, organizing theory and principles, and skills from recruiting volunteers to staging a media event. Then, you move to a more hands-on experience. You make a difference on important campaigns to transition our country to clean energy, protect wildlife, and more. For example, Lauren Karpinski, an organizer from the Green Corps Class of 2019, brought together a coalition of 40 groups that helped win a landmark solar energy bill in Arkansas.
We’re accepting the top 20 candidates for our 2026-2027 program. Graduates will join our more than 400 alumni who are leading environmental campaigns and organizations across the country. If you’re passionate about the environment and ready to learn and practice the craft of organizing after graduation, apply today!
Not a graduating senior? Add your name to our list to receive updates about Green Corps including summer internships and jobs in the environmental and broader social change field!
Green Corps’ year-long program begins in August 2026 with introductory classroom training, and continues with field placements in multiple locations across the U.S. Green Corps also offers a short-term program beginning in January 2026. Candidates must be willing to relocate. Please contact Renee Wellman at re...@greencorps.org with additional questions.
