ES Faculty Member Liz Carlise’s research and newest book was featured in UCSB’s Current online magazine this week titled “How farming perennial crops can help us in times of climate change, food insecurity and social division”.
Her new book is titled “Living Roots: The Promise of Perennial Foods” (Island Press, 2026).
“I came to perennial foods because I see these foods and the movement building around them as this really promising solution that can help us to tackle these collective challenges.”

1) Reminder: ES ADVISING IS AVALABLE over Finals & Spring Break. We are here to help you before the crowds return the 1^st week of Spring classes!

ES Advising will be open for regular advising hours during Finals & Spring Break! This is a great time to get personal attention and advice and beat the crowds that flood our office at start of Spring quarter.

- Email questions to advi...@es.ucsb.edu and we will do our best to respond as soon as possible (normally 1-2 business days).

- Schedule a remote Zoom appointment with an ES advisor using the Schedule Appointment link on the ES Advising webpage. Appointments are generally available M-R 9:00-11:45 am and 3:00-4:00 pm. and all-day Friday.

- Or, come to our Drop-in Office Hours in Bren Hall 4312 on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 1-3pm over Finals. Use remote appointments for Spring Break.

Note: ES advising will be unavailable on Friday, March 27^th.

2) APPLY NOW for Paid Environmental Summer Internships through UCSB’s BEL Program. $6,500 fellowships available in both applied and research oriented positions!

The Bren Environmental Leadership program offers undergraduates the opportunity to work side-by-side with environmental professionals and PhD students to build hands-on experience in environmental science and research across a variety of environmental disciplines. These internships are a great opportunity for students looking to develop leadership and job-ready skills in the environmental field.

Program Details:

- Undergraduates collaborate directly with a Bren graduate student on their summer project, and receive one-on-one mentoring

- The undergraduate will receive a $6,500 stipend, in addition to the opportunity to attend weekly professional development workshops and community building events across the summer quarter

- Undergraduate students will prepare short, flash-talk style presentations for the BEL community at the end of the summer and are invited to participate in the Mantell Symposium in Fall

- Most positions are hybrid, last for 10 weeks at 35 hours per week, with exact dates flexible between mid-June to mid-September

6) “The Environment of It All” Podcast is Now Hiring: Sound / Audio Engineer

The Environment of It All is seeking a skilled and dedicated Audio Engineer to produce high-quality, publishable podcast episodes with training starting this spring!

Position Overview

The Audio Engineer is responsible for the technical side of the podcast, assembling raw audio and polishing edited recordings into final episodes. This role includes attending and recording interviews, compiling audio files, integrating music, and ensuring consistent audio quality across all recordings.

The Audio Engineer will also work closely with the Editing Team and the Host on recording setup, best audio practices, and coordinate equipment use to ensure strong source recordings.

Required Technical Skills

Recording, Microphone setup and monitoring, Basic troubleshooting during sessions, Mixing

EQ, De-essing, Volume automation, Noise reduction, Editing, cutting, and condensing audio

Integrating music and punch-ins, Mastering, Compression, Loudness leveling for podcast distribution

This is an ideal position for a student passionate about science communication who is seeking hands-on experience in podcast production and works well in a small, close-knit team environment. Currently, this is an unpaid position unpaid but qualifies through units through ES 192 and the potential for payment in the future.

UC students! Applications are now open for the 2026 Agroecology Field Quarter, an interdisciplinary summer program exploring organic agriculture and equitable food systems across California. Students will engage in experiential learning, with emphasis on site visits and immersive fieldwork from the Central Coast to Fresno, Davis, and Berkeley.
