5). Local Creek Cleanup Opportunities for Environmental
Studies Students
My name is Olivia Schroeder, and I’m a UCSB Environmental Studies
student as
well as the Watershed and Creek Intern with the Environmental
Defense Center
(EDC). I wanted to reach out to see if you might be able to share
an upcoming
volunteer opportunity with students in the Environmental Studies
Department.
This fall, EDC will be hosting a series of community Creek
Cleanups. These
events are a fun and rewarding way to come together while
protecting clean
water, beaches, and wildlife from litter and pollution. In 2024
alone,
volunteers removed 7,180 pounds of trash from Goleta creeks,
preventing that
waste from reaching the ocean and harming sensitive ecosystems.
Participation also counts toward volunteer/service hours and offers students a wonderful chance to connect with the community, learn about native plants and wildlife, and gain a deeper understanding of our local watershed ecosystems.
Upcoming Cleanup Dates (all 9:00–11:30 AM):
- September 6 – Devereux / El Encanto / Phelps Creeks
- September 20 – San Pedro / Las Vegas Creeks
- October 4 – Glen Annie / Tecolotito Creeks
- October 18 – San Jose Creek
- November 1 – Maria Ygnacio / San Antonio Creeks
- November 15 – Atascadero Creek
Attached is our flyer with details for the first cleanup at Devereux on September 6. We’d love for Environmental Studies students to join, and it would be amazing if you could help spread the word by sharing this with the department.
To RSVP or learn more, students can contact Brian Trautwein at btrau...@environmentaldefensecenter.org or (805) 963-1622 ext. 108.

6). UCSB Coastal Fund is
accepting Fall
Grant Applications
Coastal Fund connects people and the environment by allocating
funds to
programs that celebrate, explore, and protect the coastal
ecosystems in and
around the University of California, Santa Barbara.
The Coastal Fund (CF) is a student initiative dedicated to
the
conservation of the UCSB coastline. Our student body recognizes
that the coast
is at the heart of our campus’ culture and character and must be
protected. In
response, each undergraduate student contributes $5.75 per
quarter, and each
graduate student $3.00 per quarter, into a fund that provides over
$450,000
each year to protect and enhance our coastline. Since Fall of
1999, the Fund
has allocated over $5 million to countless local projects or
programs. The
Coastal Fund accepts proposals during three funding cycles
throughout the year
(one per academic quarter) and critically reviews them for
consistency to the
CF Mission Statement vision and principals, relevance to the
student community,
adherence to UCSB and Regental policy and benefit to the UCSB
shoreline.
Applicants present their proposals at board meetings which gives
Board Members
opportunities to ask specific questions to each applicant and
learn about the
project in detail. Proposals are denied, funded entirely, funded
partially, or
modified as needed.
We’re excited to be getting ready for a new year of Coastal Fund applications! We’ve set our deadlines for all funding cycles this year, and they are as follows:
Fall Cycle:
Major (over $1000) Application Deadline-
8PM Friday October 3rd, 2025
Minor ($1000 or less) Application Deadline-

Spring Cycle:
Major (over $1000) Application Deadline-
8PM Friday April 3rd, 2026
Minor ($1000 or less) Application Deadline-
