ENV INTERNSHIPS: That’s
right, if you’ve secured an environmental internship with an
organization, local or nonlocal, you have the option to enroll in
and earn academic credit through ENVS 192 over any of the
available Summer Sessions. Please
visit the ENVS 192
Internship webpage to learn more and how to proceed and
complete an ES Internship Proposal Form if you want to enroll in
the class. NOTE: To earn ENVS 192 credit, one
must enroll in UCSB Summer Sessions and regular summer fees will
apply.
ENV INDEPENDENT STUDIES or RESEARCH ASSISTANT (ENVS 99, 199 and 199RA) is also available over the summer. If you secure a ES faculty advisor to sponsor an independent studies project or you secure a position to assist an ES faculty member with their research, you can enroll in these courses. 2) Sheep Docents Needed! Channel Islands Restoration is in need volunteer sheep docents at the San Marcos Foothills Preserve to hang out with the sheep and inform the public why the sheep are grazing at the preserve
Grazing helps reduce wildfire risk and supports
environmentally sustainable habitats for native species.
We still need volunteers to help us communicate information about
the sheep and
the grazing project to any curious hikers. No previous experience
is required,
and we will provide information regarding frequently asked
questions. Volunteers
will sit in a stationary spot along the trail near the sheep
grazing. Feel free
to bring a comfy camp chair, a book, binoculars, water, and
anything else you
would like with you while relaxing in the beauty of the San Marcos
Foothills
Preserve.

for an entry
level hydrogeologist with 0-2 years of experience.
The
candidate will work closely with upper-level management on a
variety of
projects including water well drilling oversight and stormwater
permitting.
Typical duties include lithologic logging, water well construction
oversight,
water well rehabilitation oversight, water quality sampling, and
construction
stormwater permit compliance. Other duties may be needed as
specified below.
The length of the position is indefinite, with potential to lead
to full-time

Job
Description: Hydrogeologist I: Duties:
Typical job duties may include hydrogeological oversight of well
drilling, well
construction, and well rehabilitation in California and possibly
out of State.
Water quality sampling for pH, turbidity, or other constituents
including water
quality meter calibration, shipping or delivering water quality
samples.
Stormwater permit monitoring during dry and wet weather at
construction sites
around Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties to inspect stormwater
best management
practices (BMPs) and writing of a brief standardized report.
Additional duties
may include asset management field data collection, GIS mapping
and analysis,
research, report writing, and other as-needed tasks.
Working Hours: Project needs vary, and work hours may include weekend or overnight shifts. However, regular hours will be M-F 9am-5pm, and typical hours may range from 10-20 hours a week in dry weather to 30-40 hours a week during rain events. During hydrogeological oversight tasks, hours may be extended to 60-70 hours per week.
Required
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in hydrogeology
and/or an interest
in water resources management that is eligible for a Professional
Geologist license,
willing to use personal cell phone/camera and vehicle, willing to
work in inclement
weather and on night shifts.
Additional
Desired Skills: hydrogeological/environmental related work
experience, water well
drilling oversight, water quality sampling, visiting/working at
construction
sites, GIS, or environmental consulting related work experience
Compensation and Benefits:
$25-30/hr
– During a 3-month probation phase and depending on experience.
$30-35/hr – Following probation phase and depending on performance

1 week of paid sick leave, 1 week of paid vacation, and 401(k)
retirement
options beginning the first year following the probation phase.
Mileage reimbursement at the current IRS mileage rate.

At this year’s summit, our keynote speakers will inspire agencies and thought leaders to leverage the built environment as the entry point and connective fabric to help make California a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable place for all.
During the breakout sessions, we will address topics related to climate and community resiliency, building electrification and utility rates, waste management and food recovery, regenerative agriculture, and climate education. The event will bring together key players from local institutions and government agencies to build collaborations for a sustainable Central Coast.
The summit is planned by partners from the cities of Goleta, Santa
Barbara,
Carpinteria, Ventura, the County of Santa Barbara, and San Luis
Obispo, the
Ventura County Regional Energy Alliance, the Community
Environmental Council,
Isla Vista Community Service District, and the University of
California, Santa
Barbara. We seek to inspire and sustain action on complex
environmental and
economic issues in our region.
This year’s Summit will also feature a Clean Transportation Showcase proudly sponsored by the Central Coast Clean Cities Coalition. The Showcase will include a display of electric vehicles, e-bikes, and advanced transportation technologies from local agencies and act as an opportunity for attendees to engage about transitioning to alternative fuel vehicles and other clean mobility options!
