2) ANOTHER ELI
PROJECT: “Reenvisioning
Recycling” - collecting
stretchy film plastics (#2 and #4) from my campus and the Isla
Vista
community.
My name is Izzy Ribondo, and I'm a third-year Environmental
Studies student at
UC Santa Barbara, currently taking a year-long course called
Environmental
Leadership Incubator (ELI), where I am continuing a
project, Reenvisioning Recycling.
This initiative focuses on collecting stretchy film plastics (#2 and #4) from my campus and the Isla Vista community. Unlike standard recyclables, these plastics are not processed through conventional recycling facilities. However, companies such as NexTrexhave developed alternative methods to repurpose this material into products like decking, park benches, and many more applications.
Plant Protectors, a collaborator on this project, collects and processes materials independently. I deliver collected plastics to their organization, where they manage sorting, baling, and shipment to NexTrex for further processing.
I am excited to share that Reenvisioning Recycling will be having collection bins around the UCSB campus, where you can drop off your plastics.
Locations are as follows: 1st floor ofEllison Hall, 2nd floor of Bren Hall on the laboratory side(2L), and lastly The MultiCultural Center(MCC), 1st floor near the Associated Students hallway.
So come and bring your stretchy plastics such as grocery store items: bread bags, shopping bags, toilet paper casing, or plastic from shipments/packaging: bubble wrap, film plastics, etc.
For more information and contact information, follow our Instagram at @reenvisioning_recycling

10) Year-Long
Internship starting Summer 2026-- Reptile and Amphibian
Monitoring with UCSB’s CCBER
The Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration (CCBER) is looking for a highly motivated undergraduate student to conduct weekly, 2-to-3-hour monitoring surveys for
small vertebrates and invertebrates at North Campus Open Space (NCOS). Long-term monitoring is essential in the restoration process at NCOS because it helps us understand how the disturbance and enhancement of the habitat affects the biodiverse array of fauna that could occupy it. Thus, consistent long-term monitoring will help us further understand the reptile,
amphibian, small mammal, and invertebrate communities, their seasonal abundances, and the long-term trends in their populations. It also gives us insight into how species colonize the site and in what habitats, enhancing our understanding of the NCOS food web as a whole. The NCOS Coverboard Monitoring study began in 2020, more information and preliminary results can be found here.
Qualifications
• Ability to identify common local reptile and amphibian species:
o Sceloporus occidentalis, Plestiodon skiltonianus, Elgaria multicarinata,
Thamnophis spp. (mainly sirtalis), Pituophis catenifer, Diadophis punctactus,
Lampropeltis californicae, Pseudacris regilla, Batrachoseps nigriventris, and
potentially other species.
• General ability to identify invertebrate groups (i.e. spider, centipede, field cricket, etc).
• Availability to consistently conduct the survey at 7AM on a weekday of your choosing throughout the summer, fall, winter, and spring quarter (we can schedule a replacement if you let us know in advance).
• Attention to detail - data must be recorded accurately and consistently.
• Ability to navigate through brushy and marshy terrain using GPS points.
• Ability to download and use the ESRI Survey123 app.
Compensation
• Quarterly Research Stipend
Please send us an email with a resume, a copy of your transcript, and a short paragraph explaining why you would be a good fit for the position. Include “Coverboard Internship FirstName LastName” in the subject line. Applications are due on May 3, 2026. Interviews will be conducted shortly afterwards, and training will commence after a candidate is picked.
