They envisioned car-free cities where walking and public transportation made everything accessible.  Their designs were multi-sensory and nature-rich, full of trees, vibrant spaces, and opportunities for play, reflection and movement. There were multi-generational communities, infertilely nurturing and healing.

4)  UCSB’s Partners in Health general meeting is this Wednesday featuring Professor Laury Oaks, who will present her career trajectory and introduce on campus opportunities in global health
- Oct. 30th, 2025 at 7 PM in Buchanan 1920!

We’re excited to host Professor Laury Oaks, who will present her career trajectory and introduce on campus opportunities in global health, including a new research project and invite applications from interested students in our club. If you’re curious about getting hands- on experience with global health research, this is a great opportunity to hear how to get involved.

We’ll also take a moment to reflect on PIH’s Global Day of Action, which is a yearly push for policy change and solidarity across campuses, and an opportunity to remember Dr. Paul Farmer. Dr. Paul Farmer was PIH’s co-founder, and a physician who dedicated his life to delivering high quality care to those who need it most. He built hospitals and trained doctors in Haiti, Rwanda and beyond. His work changed how the world thinks about global health.

6)  Draft UCSB Climate Action Plan comment period and public forum

- Join us on November 5 for a draft CAP public forum via Zoom, Nov. 5, at 3:00 pm PDT   Please RSVP here.

On behalf of the Chancellor’s Sustainability Committee, we are pleased to share our draft Climate Action Plan (CAP).  The 2025 CAP assesses and analyzes UCSB’s current, historical, and projected emissions and evaluates the campus’s progress toward meeting the UC Climate Policy.  Planned and conceptual climate change mitigation strategies are outlined in the plan and provide a potential pathway towards achieving the 90% reduction in total emissions by calendar year 2045 from a 2019 baseline.

The plan also addresses climate resilience and how we can prepare our campus community for future climate conditions. And opportunities for the campus to serve as a “living laboratory” for climate action and sustainability.

Join us on November 5 for a draft CAP public forum

This 1-hour session will be held via Zoom on November 5, beginning at 3:00 pm PDT

Please RSVP here.

Zoom link - https://ucsb.zoom.us/j/83272808237

We welcome your review and feedback.

The final version of the plan will be submitted to UC’s Office of the President (UCOP) at the end of fiscal year 2025/26. Please submit your comments by Friday, December 5, 2025, by email to jewel...@ucsb.edu.  This will give us adequate time to review feedback with the Chancellor’s Sustainability Committee, incorporate where feasible, before submitting the final version of the plan to the UCOP.

10)  Volunteer Opportunity with UCSB’s Your Children's Trees
- Friday afternoons from 2pm to 5pm and Saturday mornings from 9am to 12pm and 1:30pm to 4:30pm

Your Children’s Trees at UCSB is a campus organization conducting native species restoration and planting projects throughout the community. We are dedicated to educating the public about the benefits of urban forests and the importance of planting native trees in our communities. We are also part of a broader community non-profit, Your Children’s Trees, which provides urban forestry educational and technical support to the Santa Barbara County area.

Our tree planting and growing grounds events occur on Friday afternoons from 2pm to 5pm and Saturday mornings from 9am to 12pm and 1:30pm to 4:30pm. These events involve planting trees and/or tree care at and around UCSB and local elementary/middle schools. No experience is necessary!

Additionally, we hold Science Nights, where we get the chance to go to elementary schools and teach kids. Through crafts and short, interactive lessons, we help the kids understand the significance of trees and nature. The next Science Nights will occur on Thursday 11/6 from 5pm to 8pm and Monday 11/10 from 5pm to 8pm.

If interested in attending any of these events, register using this Google Form:

11)  Recruitment for PAID UCSB and Los Padres National Forest (LPNF) stream monitoring efforts during spring 2026.

eDNA Field/Lab Technicians Needed Spring 2026

We are seeking 4-5 paid technicians to assist us with the collection of stream water samples from the Los Padres National Forest (LPNF) for environmental DNA (eDNA) analyses and other ancillary lab and field work. We are currently looking for students to work a minimum of 20 hours per week during spring quarter 2026, so this request is suited for recent graduates, soon to be graduates, or students with no classes or a very reduced class load (e.g., 4 units) during spring quarter.

We have been monitoring a suite of physical, chemical, biological parameters in streams of the LPNF during the past 10 years, including snorkel surveys for federally endangered Southern CA steelhead trout; however, during spring 2026 we would like to obtain more qualitative details about vertebrates and invertebrates in LPNF streams using eDNA. You will learn about streams of the LPNF and gain valuable field and laboratory skills that are highly transferable professionally.

Flexibility is a bonus. Please note whether you can dedicate full days towards field work during the week. The LPNF is a large forest and it takes time to reach many streams. No prior eDNA experience is necessary, and we will all perform 1-2 days of training in eDNA collection techniques prior to the spring field season. Being physically fit and able to hike up to 5 miles in rugged and steep terrain is required, as is a valid driver’s license.

Techs will ensure that equipment is in good working order and properly calibrated, and that data collections are legible, clear and properly collected following standardized protocols. Long days in the field are expected. Data entry into Excel spreadsheets will be required. Techs must be comfortable working as part of a team, following detailed instructions, responding to unexpected events, and always acting in a professional manner. Applicants with diverse backgrounds, experiences, abilities, and perspectives are encouraged to apply.

USFS vehicles will be provided but technicians are responsible for their own transportation to and from UCSB. Driving is on remote and rugged roads, so excellent driving skills and previous experience using 4WD vehicles is preferred.

This project is a collaboration between UCSB (Dr. Mark Page) and the LPNF (Dr. Kristie Klose). If interested in gaining valuable and rewarding hands-on lab and field experience, please email Dr. Klose at  kristi...@usda.gov with the information requested below.

In your email response, please include a short resume (no more than two pages) and a cover letter as a PDF that includes the following:

- Year, major, graduation date

- Experience (internships, relevant classes, GPA)

- References

- Availability (field hours range from 7AM-6PM M-F, weekends as necessary):

- Why do you want to work on this project?

- Describe your field and lab technical experience

- Explain type and level of physical fitness (e.g., hiking, bouldering, backpacking, etc)

Dates:  Application deadline: Friday, November 7, 2025

Start date: April 1, 2026

End date: June 2026 (TBD)

Compensation:   Approximately $20/hour depending on experience

To Apply:  Please email 1) a cover letter, 2) resume, 3) transcripts (unofficial/official) and 4) three references (including name, organization, phone, email, and relationship to you) to Dr. Klose at kristi...@usda.gov no later than Friday, November 7, 2025. Please combine all application materials into one PDF for submission.
