The soil system stores twice as much carbon as the atmosphere and all the world's vegetation combined. This presentation will discuss the fundamental mechanisms by which the soil system controls the earth's climate and practices that have shown promise to bend the curve of increasing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. Dr. Berhe will share insights from her career journey from professor to leader of one of the nation's largest science funding

agencies.

Drawing on her earth system science expertise, she will discuss how the Office of Science works to advance scientific frontiers across disciplines, address grand challenges like climate change, and strengthen American leadership in science and technology by engaging talent from across the country. 14)  Tips and Resources for Move Out of Isla Vista from the Isla Vista Community Services District

Move-out season is just around the corner! Isla Vista Community Services District’s Move Out Campaign has pulled together some helpful tips and resources below to guide you through your move-out journey—whether it’s donating, storing, or clearing out your space.

TL;DR: Tell your landlord about maintenance issues now, reserve storage space now, bring home items on Memorial Day Weekend, and donate things you don’t want (doorstep pickups available). Items left on the curb will be thrown away by Marborg, several times a day. Hazardous waste must be brought to 565 Mesa Rd (near Harder Stadium) on the weekends.

Plan Ahead

Report maintenance issues to your landlord before you move out to maximize your security deposit refund.*

IVCSD offers a free Rental Housing Mediation and Legal Advice Program to support residents if you have questions about lease terms, security deposits, maintenance concerns, and more. Our team helps resolve issues early, reduce miscommunication, and support smoother transitions—especially during move-out season.

Bring Home Belongings Memorial Day Weekend

Start bringing items you don’t need home during Memorial Day Weekend (May 24-26)! This will ensure that you can fit everything in your car for your final trip home in June.

Find Storage Early

Donate or Sell Unwanted Items Before You Move Out

Have items that you need until the day you move out? Post the items with the pick-up date on the day your lease ends.

Between June 11th and 27th, items left on the sidewalk will be picked up by Marborg garbage trucks multiple times a day.

Approximately 1 million pounds of waste are generated in Isla Vista during move-out season each year. This year, Marborg will be picking up bulky items and emptying trash bins all day, starting on Wednesday June 11th and ending on Friday June 27th at noon.

The following materials are NOT accepted at curbside: green waste, construction materials (e.g., carpet, lumber, paint, etc.), hazardous waste, and any remodeling material, including drywall, kitchen, or plumbing fixtures.

Final few things to note:

·       Place Batteries in ziplock bags and put them on top of your recycling bin for collection.

·       Other hazardous waste, such as household cleaning products and paint, should be brought to the Community Hazardous Waste Collection Center: UCSB Campus, Mesa Rd, building 565 in Goleta, Saturdays from 9am-3pm and Sundays from 11am-3pm.
