2)  Thinking of taking ES classes this Summer, then check out ENVS 108O: History of the Oceans

Summer Session A, 2026

Instructor: Michael Montgomery <mpmont...@ucsb.edu>
Mon., Tues., Wed., Thurs, 3:30-4:40 p.m

This June and July, in ENVS 108O, come explore the history of the oceans! We will be taking the plural in the title literally: while it is often said there is only one ocean, one unbroken

saltwater world, it is at least equally true that each major ocean basin, and countless regions within them, would richly reward a lifetime of study.

To make the most of our six weeks, ENVS 108O lectures and readings will focus on select topics that illustrate the unique and interacting human and ecological histories of particular ocean basins, including the fantastical fish pictured below: a West Indian Ocean coelacanth, living representative of a lineage once thought to have gone extinct millions of years ago. If you are wondering what all those extra fins are for, or why the story of this fish reveals as much about the colonial and postcolonial history of Africa as it does the Mesozoic Era in Earth history, please join us! The coelacanth will be just one among several of what I intend to be widely relevant examples of how and why there are, and have always been, many oceans.

11)  College Corps Community Service Opportunities - These partners provide meaningful mentorship and hands-on learning experiences while supporting important community needs in the areas of climate action, food security, and K-12 education.

I am reaching out on behalf of the UCSB Sustainability Department and the College Corps program to share information about our Community Host Partners and upcoming community service opportunities.

About College Corps Community Host Partners:  Community Host Partners are the many nonprofit organizations, K–12 schools, public universities, and government agencies that host UCSB College Corps Fellows. These partners provide meaningful mentorship and hands-on learning experiences while supporting important community needs in the areas of climate action, food security, and K-12 education. We are incredibly grateful for the support they provide to our students.

Information for Potential Community Host Partners:  We are currently sharing information about a wide range of organizations that are hosting fellows or are interested in working with students. Some examples include:

• K–12 schools such as Adelante Charter School, Kellogg Elementary School, and after-school programs within the Santa Barbara Unified School District
• Nonprofit organizations focused on food security, including Apples to Zucchini Cooking School, the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County, and Organic Soup Kitchen
• Climate and sustainability organizations such as Campus Canopy, Channel Islands Restoration, the Community Environmental Council, and the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden
• Government and university-based programs, including the City of Santa Barbara Sustainability & Resilience Department, UCSB CalFresh, Explore Ecology’s School Garden Program, and several community-based education initiatives

These placements allow fellows to support projects such as tutoring and mentoring K-12 students, assisting with food access programs, participating in climate resilience projects, supporting environmental education, and helping with outreach and community engagement efforts.

You can also find more information about the community host partners, and the college corps program in general on our webiste: https://sicr.sa.ucsb.edu/college-corps-chp. I've also attached a flier you can send out to the students as well!
