4) LOCAL ENV
LECTURE: Santa Barbara
Water History and
the Mission Tunnel – A Lecture by Hugo A. Loaiciga, Ph.D. –
Affiliated ES
faculty member.
- Thursday, October 23rd at 6:00pm, Alhecama Theatre (215 a East
Canon Perdido
St.)
Take a deep dive into Santa Barbara’s water history! Join us on Thursday, October 23rd at 6:00pm for a talk by UCSB Professor and Hydrologist, Dr. Hugo Loaiciga.
Discover how flow reduction rendered Santa Barbara’s Gibraltar Reservoir and Mission Tunnel water systems obsolete, after reliably providing the city with water for most of the 20th century. Hear about the City’s recent water provision solutions, including Cachuma Lake, seawater desalination and wells. Consider future water challenges Santa Barbara will face and some possible pathways forward.
Hugo Loaiciga, Ph.D, is an expert in Hydrology, especially in the subjects of groundwater hydrology, hydrogeology, water resources systems, and applied mathematics. Dr, Locaiciga applies numerical, statistical, and field methods to answer complex problems involving the interactions between surface water, groundwater, and human activities. A professor in the Department of Geography, Dr. Loaiciga also serves as Director of UCSB’s Hydrology Laboratory. He has published over 400 archival papers and received several awards for his research and work.

5) UCSB Campus
Sustainability’s Take Back the Tap initiative’s screening of the
PBS
documentary “Poisoned Waters” on Wednesday, October 22, from
6:30–8:30 p.m. in
the First Floor Conference Room, SRB
Take Back the Tap is a campus program dedicated
to creating
awareness about water quality standards and reducing single-use
plastic water
bottle consumption. Our mission is to emphasize the importance of
water as a
human right and build trust in state and national water safety
regulations.
We are organizing a screening of the PBS documentary “Poisoned
Waters” on
Wednesday, October 22, from 6:30–8:30 p.m. in the First Floor
Conference Room,
SRB. The film examines the contamination of Chesapeake Bay and
Puget Sound,
investigating how toxic pollutants, industrial runoff, and
insufficient
environmental enforcement threaten aquatic ecosystems and human
health. The
documentary examines environmental policy, ecosystem degradation,
and
restoration efforts, and will provide a nuanced understanding of
the complex
relationship between human activity and ecosystem health to
Environmental
Science students.
In addition, we are hosting a Tap Water Testing Initiative to help students learn more about local water quality and clear skepticism surrounding tap water consumption. The event will be taking place on Saturday October 18, from 1-3p.m. at St. Michael's University Community Center. Students are encouraged to bring a sample of their apartment tap water to better understand its safety and quality.

6) INTERNSHIPS with The
Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost through the 2025-26
Academic Affairs
Student Internship Program.
We have an exciting
opportunity for
undergraduate students to develop professional skills while also
learning about
careers in higher education administration, including
opportunities here on the
UC Santa Barbara campus, through the 2025-26
Academic Affairs Student Internship Program.
The internship is a two quarter long course that focuses on the development of professional, administrative, and leadership skills. Two unique components of this program are the moderated panels and networking events with current staff, as well as Q+A sessions with campus senior officers and administrators. Interns also receive one-on-one mentoring from a staff member in the Division of Academic Affairs.
Interns should be current undergraduate students with upper-division standing as of Winter, 2026 who are available to participate during the scheduled time for the course (Fridays, 9:00am - 10:50am) in the Winter and Spring quarters. The internship consists of 2 upper-division units each quarter.
Apply for the internship by completing this form--applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and must be submitted no later than Friday, November 7. Applicants will also need to join one of the Meet & Greet sessions in October and November (additional information can be found on the form).
Please contact inter...@evc.ucsb.edu for any questions.
We look forward to receiving your application.
