Enfield Garage Sale Chat Group

Hi everyone - 

Where I live during the school year the community uses WhatsApp to create chat groups for various topics.  They are easy to use and the best feature is that you can MUTE the chat so you don't get notifications if you don't want to and can just look at it when you want to and it does not clog your email inbox.

One chat that is super useful is the garage sale chat where people post items to give away or to sell.  I have a bunch of stuff to give away or to sell and typically i just pack it up and bring it to the Listen Center.  However, I have heard that the Listen Center will often throw out a lot of things donated even new stuff which seems very wasteful to me.  

I think that an Enfield Garage Sale chat might be very popular and useful for people.  I wanted to gage interest and if anyone else is interested please let me know.  I need at least one other person to create a group within WhatsApp so if you want to start it with me please reply to this and we can start it and then post the link for others to join.  You need to download WhatsApp which just works with your phone number.

Probably a great idea, but I resist downloading apps if I don't have to. Posting things for sale on this forum works just as well for me. Sharon

Hi - 

It does not seem like many people are interested so I will post one last time just to explain it again but I won't post again about it so nobody has to write to say that you are not interested.  = )

However, if anyone is interested you can reach out to me and we can start the chat and post the link - maybe it will be a success and maybe it won't.  If it does not happen no problem!

WhatsApp chats has made my life significantly better and they are easy to use.  I realize it is similar to Facebook and email distro lists but this has worked better to create connections and bring people together easily.  We use it for our school groups, kids groups, sports groups, social groups, events, whatever you can think of,  etc.  

I could easily see these chats for this community assuming you are interested in doing any of these activities and would like to find other people to do it with: waterski, sailing, biking, swimming, local events, mahjong/games group, book group, group kid activity (parents who want to get together with other kids - we have these for various age groups), enfield businesses (post specials or events going on), and the garage sale.

It is one of the things that I love about where I live, but if it is not for this community no problem! I was just trying to suggest something I have seen work well.  I thought starting with the garage sale chat is easy because everyone likes free stuff or to sell stuff and we all like getting rid of stuff and it's easier than a big garage sale.

The benefit of a WhatsApp Garage Sale chat are a few things:

1) it would include just local people so pick up coordination is quick and easy;

2) if you don't want to join it you don't have to;

3) WhatsApp allows you to silence notifications so you don't see pop ups;

4) all communication relating to giving away or selling things are in that one chat so you don't have to root through email or facebook messages;

5) when you post something to give away or sell typically people respond very quickly and you are done dealing with the item quickly;

6) you can post little things that you think someone might still want but not worth sending an email to the entire distro list about (for example, i have a great cat litter box set up I am going to throw out and i would not send an email about this to the distro list... but for anyone looking to get cats or want an improvement litter box set up let me know!)

The other thing as with the new thinking of "garage sale" not everyone will be interested just as here.......

For me I think if you indicate in the subject what the topic is for the regular Listserve you can always press delete.
