When we were lobbying for the school bond issue, we heard many concerns: the school is too big, it costs too much, we did not have all those things when we were in school, and taxes are too high.

But what I remember most is how many people came together to help. People from the left, the right, and the center all worked side by side. Many people, including those of us who did not have children in the schools, spent our own money on mailings and gave a great deal of our time because we believed in something important.

We believed our schools should not lose accreditation. We believed our children deserved warm, safe classrooms in the middle of winter. And we believed that investing in our schools was an investment in the future of our community.

It was not always easy. We were criticized in letters to the editor and on the radio, but the community came together and passed the bond issue with the two-thirds vote that was needed.

So what did that effort produce?

It produced a very nice school. It produced proper facilities for staff and students. It produced an auditorium and gym that were needed and are now being used regularly. Most importantly, it helped create an environment where our students have continued to grow in academics, the arts, athletics, and other extracurricular activities.

Of course, we can always improve. But we should also recognize the good that has been accomplished. Our kids are doing great, our staff works hard every day, and our schools continue to move in a positive direction.

Best,
Bob Cusick

While I was initially skeptical regarding the additional expense of the auditorium, in addition to the much needed renovation of the high school, it has been a great venue for many wonderful school district and other local Mascoma Valley events.  It is also a potential wider Upper Valley resource, with coordination around the logistics of School District use, and thus the possibility of offsetting revenue.

That's all well and good, but moving forward I think we should cap off our spending. I think that $30000 a kid is way more then enough since we are talking about grade school not college. After all the national average isn't even $18000 per child. The town budget being set at $2000 for every man women and child living in Enfield is more than enough also.

I have tried to stay out of this conversation but can't anymore............... I did not vote for any part of the school
renovation either but have enjoyed many events in the auditorium.   The auditorium is much better than the
Lebanon Opera House that spent millions on renovations and still you get people sitting in front of you
blocking the view...........

As for the school here which I know we are really talking about and after having worked in the Mascoma School District
for many years there are lots of things the school can't control like paying for out of state tuition for students in need and
it is not cheap (I got to see those costs back in the 90's and I can't imagine what it is now)..........
We don't get alot of reimbursement from the State for these students and we have no choice.
Personally I feel the current administration and staff have done a much better job of controlling costs than our
own town has so I say BRAVO to the school district...........

Amen
As a retired administrator and special educator and past classroom teacher, and  now a very active substitute at the EVS, we can be a proud Enfield community. Our children at ALL levels academically as well as athletically, and shining in the arts field are doing well as they head out on their next journey in life. You can never invest too much in your community children.
