🌳 Free Native Oak Seedlings! 🌳

The Granite State Rockstars 4-H Club will be at Mascoma Lakeside Park this afternoon rescuing and potting up volunteer oak seedlings as part of a hands-on conservation and learning project.

Stop by anytime after 5:00 PM and pick up a free oak seedling from under the kiosk while supplies last.

Why an oak tree?

Native plant expert Doug Tallamy calls oaks a keystone species, meaning they support more wildlife than almost any other tree in North America. Oaks provide food and habitat for hundreds of species of butterflies, moths, birds, and other wildlife. In fact, a single oak tree can support hundreds of caterpillar species, an essential food source for nesting birds.

Thanks for the offer! We certainly aren’t lacking for acorns in New Hampshire.

The oak seedlings were actually part of a larger 4-H and UNH Extension project at Lakeside Park. The students learned about pollinators, native ecosystems, and stewardship while carefully removing and potting volunteer seedlings. The giveaway was a fun way to share the results of their work with the community.

It was wonderful to see young people making connections between what they learned and the natural world around them. And it was equally rewarding to see community members stop by to take home a seedling and spend time in the park. Lakeside Park is truly a community treasure, and it’s always gratifying to see people enjoying and connecting with this special place.
