Girls - anyone ride in anything other than riding tights for training?
I've ordered some Kerrit's and I'm sure they'll be comfortable, but I
already stick out enough just for riding the local backroads on a
thoroughbred mare in an aussie saddle with a GPS strapped to it.
Spandex might just put people over the edge ;)

I've tried regular jeans (unbearable) or stretch jeans (a little
better) Wrangler QBaby's with the flat seams (OK for drill team but
not long trots). I've tried pantyhose under jeans, that just made
things worse wedgie-wise.

Even if I could find tights in a denim color, that would be better,
but I can't find any. I wear half chaps, so something tight on the
lower leg is OK, and the chaps kind of hide the fact that they are
tights, a little bit. Unless I have to get off and walk!

I was thinking english breeches might look a little more like regular
pants but are they comfortable? Anyone tried these? They can be pricey
so I'm hesitant to experiment...

I'm average sized (M in Kerrits) if that matters...

I go for comfort first, and don't care what our locals think. lol Mind
you, we are in cowboy country. We have some of the top NFR cowboys in
our little town, where roping is more popular than many sports. And,
I've been known to stop at the local Wal-Mart in my tights after riding.
(gasp)!!! I figure, who cares?

As far as comfort, even in tights, what is super wonderful to one, can
be less that comfy to the next. I like my Kerritt flow rise, that are
the cotton blend for daily riding. And, they come in basic colors, like
Tan....which my hubby rides in!!!

At Saks Fifth Avenue you can buy the new rage in leggings! They have
all the features of denims including pockets and only cost $211 (:>)
http://www3.dealtime.com/xDN-clothing-style_jeans-ap_material_nylon-stretch_fit
(the 3rd item)

OR what I like (when they fit right) is the TuffRider stretch denim
breeches with NO inside seam and a nice inside patch for under $50.
http://www.equestriancollections.com/product.asp?groupcode=JP00248
The only problem I have with them is trying to find the correct size,
seems I couldn't find a chart to tell me where to measure, so I have a
couple pair that are too small and a couple that fit. Maybe I should
just loose 10 pounds and make them all fit (:>) I sure like them for
conditioning rides and working around the place.

Thanks Jonni - I'll definitely stick with the tights if they are
what's most comfortable - still waiting for them to arrive so haven't
tried them yet.

Yeah, don't think I'm going to find any spandex-tights-disguised-as-
Levis anyway :)

I love my Kerrits f/s pull-ons w/belt loops.  I look, feel, and move better. (I think they help circulation. Really) They are black/black, western cut, and I wear them for both western and dressage.  And....  machine washable. Considering some of the prices on f/s breeches, these are inexpensive at 99/pr

They look great with any kind of boot, and if I want to wear my half-chaps, the material is light enough to fold to the outside without feeling bulky or making pressure points.

The only issue I had is getting them on and off with speed when necessary, if you take my meaning....  but with more toning and less jiggly its getting easier, lol.....

I love my Aanstadt Das breeches the very best, Sonja can make them boot cut; the material is divine and is very supportive but stretchy 4 ways.  Her prices are more reasonable than some other high-market makers, but a little more than the Kerritts I described above.

Now I find my Wrangle Aura jeans restrictive, compared to when I first left regular jeans....  I find excuses to wear my Kerrits in town, lol.....  Makes my size 16 look like a 12.  I daresay I could put on a pair of heels and be just fine, too, lol......     no blingie belts, tho.

Cheers, and happy experimenting to ya,

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Those jeans might work, Kathy
(the $50 ones). Now with everyone else's comments though, I'm tempted
to say - who cares!!

I just told my husband (who has seen the tights in a store) about my
search, my post and your comments. He said, "You mean you wear JUST
the tights?? They don't go under jeans??" haha, yes dear.

I have been wearing plain vanilla sweatpants, not only training but at rides
too. My saddle has an artificial wool seat cover so maybe that makes the
difference but the only time I ever get rubs or chafing is when my pants get wet
and even then not always. I color coordinate with a navy sweatshirt so being
overweight, I look like a blue dumpling on a creme saddle on a brown horse LOL!

With limited income, I can still have lots of different "looks" (read colors)
with my Thrift Store "riding pants" and I NEVER look like I've ever been
anywhere near a bicycle! Look like a cowgirl? Nah... More like dowdy. I
think that's the word :)

Last year I did some fairly warm rides and so at Convention I ordered a pair of
riding pants from Just For Horsin Round in case I go to a ride where the
temperatures get into the 90s and 100s. Haven't used them yet.

lightweight sweatpants or wind pants that fit loose cover up my large/extra large tights and I don't have rubs and don't embarrass myself.

Well, I'm not a girl. But I usually ride in riding tights for training.

I'm fortunate to live in an area where a lot of people do a lot of
outdoor activities. So if I go into a McDonalds, a gas station, a
regular restaurant or even Wal-mart after a ride still in the tights, no
one bats an eye.

"...I was thinking english breeches might ..."

Back in the good old days when I was a cowboy wanna-be who had discovered
distance riding, I got some breeches as my first step down the slippery
slope. Then I bought a saddle without a horn, then a helmet, then an
Arabian horse and tights. My degradation was complete!

Seriously, I still use breeches during cooler weather, riding in the
mountains, and most of my training rides. They work great. In fact since
they have belt loops I can use a hip holster instead of a shoulder holster.
They are far superior to tights for brush poppin'.

My bottom line: Don't worry about what they think, if they participate in
distance riding they know why you have the tack you have, if they don't they
are clueless. If they make a comment, invite them to train with you and go
with you. You will be amazed at the number of excuses they will find.

I agree with all that's been said. go with what works best and is
most comfortable for you. If you're self-conscious, you might try
what someone suggested of a pair of light sweatpants over the tights.
Personally, I just find that sweat pants over tights make me look
baggy and flappy instead of just bulgy. :(

I've tried the stretch riding jeans and didn't like that they only
stretched one direction and not the other. I found them uniquely
uncomfortable and binding, even more than regular jeans.

I do love my kerrits and I have a couple of different models from
them, both lightweight and heavier. ONly thing I wish was the the
pockets were more secure as the bottoms came unsewed and my phone
ended up in my boot.

OK I admit it, it's not my neighbors' faults!! I get good-natured
ribbing from them, but it's mostly about owning a mare.

It's my own self-consciousness about the spandex, and I'd have it even
if I lived in spandex-land. But increased riding is reducing the
"wobbly bits" so maybe it will become a non-issue :) For me at least.
I don't know about the neighbors!

I think you'll be surprised at the comfort this so-called "spandex" offers. BTW- I don't think many riding tights are actually made of spandex any longer. I know I love my Kerrits ribbed tights which not only are extra comfortable but the compression feels super nice after lots of miles. They are not spandex lol.

Let 'em laugh. You'll be the one laughing after several miles when they have bloody rubs and you're sittin' pretty. I go everywhere in my tights and half-chaps. I usually just get looks from little kids who like to ask if I'm a jockey!

yes.  be careful about what you are getting.  the kerrits (all tights i'm sure) come in different weights, from super thin (which one of my guy riders loved under his jeans) to very supportive.

I go everywhere in my Irideons after the barn and no one much seems to care [least of all me].

What floors me though, is when I am in full riding get up buying 1/2 dozen 5# bags of carrots, and people ask me if I have a lot of rabbits.

Girls - anyone ride in anything other than riding tights for training?

You'll love your riding tights and soon will forget you have them on. We
live in a very rural farming community and the folks at the little local
store don't even give us a second look in our tights, boots and half chaps.

Even my teenage grandson finally gave up and began competing in tights. His
mom made them from a pattern because he wanted his "to show NOTHING".

I learned equitation as a child with the funny pants (making thighs look even bigger than they are).  After that experience...who cares!  I love my kerrits and wear them even when trail riding with a bunch of cowgirls.  Now that I need a knee brace full time...they are essential.
Kerrits have stopped making the cargo tights with the pockets, so mine have been repaired numerous times to maintain pocket integrity!
