Hi Everybody...

I need a little help. I need to sew some biothane . Does anybody sew there own bridles ? Can you tell me what kind of thread are you using ? and where
to buy it. ?

Any help appreciated. I need to fix my breastcollar and replace a strap.

Thanks Diana :-)

Hello Diana,

Yes, I have sewn leather, and biothane and riveted leather and
biothane. I use a heavy duty nylon or poly thread that they sell specifically
for leather and nylon. Some places will only sell to you if you
have a business license and are thereby buying wholesale.

You might check at Tandy/Leather Factory. They might have something
and don't require a business license to order from them.

Also in Springfield Missouri, there is a place, oh, Springfield
Leather Company and here is there website.
http://springfieldleather.com/store/category/110/735/Threads/

The black, white and red stuff on the 1/2 lb spools is probably what
you want, the #46, or call them and talk to them as they often have
some thread there that is a little heavier or lighter and you may need
to get what works in your machine, unless you are hand sewing it.
I was last in that shop back about 1 1/2 years ago, so I don't know
what they have on hand.

Sometimes you can buy thread from Shelton Reynolds, but I don't think
they have a website.

Or if you take it to any shoe repair place or harness shop, they
should be able to repair it for you.

What size needle would you use on biothane?  What would the tension setting be?  And would it be better to rivet biothan rather than sew it?

You can sew it by hand with the an awl. You can get them at Davids in
Decatur Diane. Or, rivit them, which you can also get at Davids. The
thread that comes wiht the hand awl is the thick, coated stuff for
leather.

Otherwise, you may be able to have a boot repair place do it for you.
I'd not even bother with a regular sewing machine.

Hello D'Arcy,

I use a needle that I use for sewing nylon. I use a different
needle for sewing leather. They have different types out there.
You have to get the right type needles for your machine then
you have to get the type for sewing something like layers of nylon.

I don't have a machine that has particular tension settings. I have
an industrial machine and you sew some material and see how the
stitches look. Then you adjust the tension knobs and check it again.
You do this until you get it set right. So it is going to depend on
your sewing machine and how you set the tension. My tension adjustment
knobs don't have numbers or anything on them and my machine is about
as far from computer compatible as possible.

I think most people prefer to sew biothane and beta. I have some
bridles I made that I riveted together. I like it because the rivets
are much smoother than sewing biothane, but the rivets aren't as
pretty as sewing. The riveted bridles are about 6 years old and
holding up fine. I think it would be a personal preference as to
riveting or sewing.

Try www.sailrite.com

Their business started by convincing people to sew their own sails
with home sewing machines and then selling them the needles and thread
to do it. They sell everything now for sails, canvas and leather
sewing but still very friendly over the phone. If you call them and
tell them what you are doing I'm sure they can get you set up.

Good luck,

Clay
