Hello!

While I adore my current saddle, I have come to the sad conclusion that all the gadgets and gizmos on the planet won't make it fit properly and so I plan on selling it in the near future. It fits me like a glove and has some great features to it that I will sorely miss, but fit is more important.

My mare is short backed with wide sprung ribs and a forward girth groove which tends to pull the saddle forward. The main problem with my current saddle is that the billets are naturally farther back which adds to the problem. I have tried a nonslip pad, crossing my billets, and an anatomic girth. Before I spend even more money adding a crupper to the getup I think it is time to call a spade a spade.

Anyway....does anyone have experience with the Rubicon? It seems like it would work well with the billet positioning being changeable and the overall structure of the tree. Before I waste more money on shipping, can anyone give me their experiences with it?

Thanks a lot!!! Before I spring this on the hubby I want to get all the information I can.

Sara

I've tried the Rubicon, but my horse has pretty large, laid back shoulders and the front of the saddle is too forward for him as he needs an extremely straight front flap or even swept back.   I also prefer a saddle with a wider gullet than the Rubicon (it's only about 2" wide in the rear of the saddle, which really isn't enough width for the spinous process).

My horse:  Wide, laid back shoulders, broad, flat back, HUGE withers, forward girth groove and only 16" of real estate to put the dang saddle!

I suggest you talk directly to Bev Gray.  She is the USA rep for Arabian Saddle Co. and would be most knowledgeable about the Rubicon, I think.  I am currently using a Specialized Eurolight on my short backed, wide sprung, rafter backed, forward girth grooved mare :) Nothing is perfect!  Cindy

Haven't found one yet.  I did get a Barnsby Bonfire Proseat last week that would be perfect for my horse if it weren't too wide.  Was very comfy for me too.  Nice, wide panels and wide gullet and a forward billet system.

The next closest was a Sommer Savoy Flextra.  It needs widening, but it is a bit too close to his scapula in the front, so I am not going to spend the money to widen it unless I absolutely can't find anything else.  Plus, I really need a point billet system (sounds like you do too) and it doesn't have one.

Karen, I was also going to suggest a point billet system.  Sara, have you considered a ReactorPanel?

I just don't see how they can possibly fit a short backed horse.

Karen,

 >>Wide, laid back shoulders, broad, flat back, HUGE withers, forward girth groove and only 16" of real estate to put the dang saddle!<<

To build on what Laney said about ReactorPanel saddles, In the case of your horse, you'd likely be starting out with a flat (Baker) tree, instead of the standard style one with rocker.  A lot of different breed horses need those, can't always generalize by breed though.  Both my Lipizzan-Arab cross and my new TWH need the Baker tree, for instance.

Properly fit, I don't know of anything else that would work as well.  My TWH has super high withers which end well into his back, wide laid back shoulders and we have to use the point billets.  No breast collar or crupper is needed to keep the saddle in place on the steepest of hills.  We can go into it more at some point privately if you'd like.

regards,
Lynne

The Sensation hybrid works well on bit withered horses. We have a TWH
mare with a huge shoulder and wither. The front of the hybrid is
flexible with no pinching and allows the scapula to rotate under it.
Yes, it is treeless, but has a good structure and panels with spine
clearance.

Ditto on Lynne's comments about Reactor Panel. They made short panels for the horses who need it and the shorter tree points will also help to stay away from the shoulder. There are 4 billets so lots of choices to help keep the saddle in position along with different size disks and shims if needed these saddles are very adaptable and offer solutions to a variety of back issues and allow complete free motion of the shoulder and scapula.

Didn't see original post, but Josie loves riding her Rubicon. I really hate having to ride with her when she doesn't get to use it. All I hear is how much better it is when she sits a canter. >g<

Ah, found the original. One thing my daughter really likes about her Rubicon is that it has either jumping or dressage length billets. That helped her horse who has very well sprung ribs. We found out he did much better with a shaped jumping length girth.

What region are you in? If it happens to be the SE we'll be at Talladega, Right Lead and Skymont. You're welcome to try it out.

Thanks everyone for the responses!! I am close to being at my wits end over saddle fit. She is impossible!

Angie - I am in SC. I will have to look up those rides and see how close they are and if I can manage to get there. I wish I could invent more time in my day between a full time job and a 9 month old son plus trying to get my mare into 50 mile shape for next season. Thank you so much for the offer!!! I greatly appreciate it!

As for the reactor panel - I tried working with the company before I bought my current get up and they were difficult to work with. I sent tracings and pictures and just could never connect with anyone about tree size and such. In the end I decided that the customer service was not good enough to want me to hand over that much money.

I am currently also looking into the Free N Easy line, but was just informed that they are currently not producing saddles because they are retooling the design. That could be a great thing or a terrible thing, you never know. I like the variable girthing system they offer.

After trying three other saddle brands on my horse, I found Specialized to work and also got a Freeform.

Not sure when you got less than stellar service from RP, but IMHO it is worth trying again.

I started my 4 year old mare in an endurance model and 6 years later we are in the same saddle (with some adjustments along the way). We have never had any back issues either during conditioning or in competition. This includes a 75 mile ride last year when she got a nasty bite from a pasture mate on her back two days before the ride, exactly where my left seatbone sits.

Not saying one kind of saddle can work for everyone every time, but it is worth giving RP a second try on the customer service front :)

Good luck with the Great Saddle Search!

I'd second that!  Everyone can have a bad day, but excellent customer service has always been a major focus for Carmi & the company.  They are one of the few saddlemakers that can really custom fit a saddle to any horse's conformation.
