hello,

I hurchased a Reactor Panel VSD Summit for my horse this fall and have been using it with the fleece booties. I was wondering if anyone has any experience using a regular wool pad (+/- inserts - I bought it when I bought my treeless saddle years ago), a haf pad, or an Equipedic pad. I like the booties but would like a backup in case I go to a multiday ride and get them yucked up. I have been advised to use a Skito pad, but hate to buy another expensive pad when I already own so many, if one of those many would work....

Any experiences would be greatly appreciated....

Shannon:

We have used flexible panel saddles (various Ortho-Flex models) since 1991.
From the illustrations in the RP website their system seems similar. During
this whole time we have put an old fashioned wool saddle blanket between the
horse and the booties. The only complication we have found is that
sometimes the blanket will shift around. We then discovered the soft mesh
plastic drawer liners sold by various big box stores for kitchen drawers. A
similar, and a bit longer lasting product is sold at auto parts stores, like
NAPA, to mechanics to line tool box drawers. A piece of this between the
blanket and the bootie stops slipping.

We wash the blankets frequently, and the booties once a year whether they
need it or not. With a supply of blankets, we are set for multiday rides.
I think we have worn out one or two sets of booties the whole time.

Hi, I would get a second set of booties. As a saddle pad under the
flex panels will bunch up/move around and could rub your horse raw.

I have two sets for my RP saddle, check the RP web site, sometimes you
can find used ones or clearance booties on sale.

Personally, I think having an extra set (or 3 or 4) of woolback cordura RP pad sets are the way to go for multidays. I have 4 but would generally just change pads twice. For extra luxury try the Mattes sheepskin.

For therapeutic use or for a horse where the saddle really moves, people really like the Skito Dryback insert pads under RPs. Some use the longer version to ride under a cantle bag. I know they're spendy. Some people like Equipedics and Supracors, but you're not really saving money there.

Most popular pads have been tried with RP saddles. Individual horses
often do better in one type of pad over another. The pads that have
been tested with RPs over a great number of Endurance horses and have
worked well on the majority are the pads that RP has in their store.
Pads that have been beneficial to some horses, but not beneficial to
the majority they were tested on are: Supracore and Haf. Equipedic
pads are being used on a growing number of horses with RPs
successfully. It is important to note that the only Equipedic that
fits well enough with RPs is the Endurance model with the full
flaps.

I recommend testing any pad you'd like as long as you check the fit
ahead of time and plan a short ride for the first test to monitor any
issues. Do take the panel covers (booties) off prior to using a
single pad. I personally use the "booties", Skito and Equipedic
depending on the horse, the horse's fitness level, weather and the
terrain.

Enjoy your RP!

Lynne's and expert at RP's!  I have one.  I've tried the Supracor under my RP, and Beau hated it.  The Dryback worked okay, but that's a woolback.  He also hated the Dixie Midnight Pad... he hates anything that's not woolback or coolback.  I would just get more booties too.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, Equipedic isn't saving money if I was buying bur already have one, so was wondering if it would work before spending more!
