OK - just heard back on xray results that I have a small fracture to the sacrum.  Waiting to get aptmt to ortho, but of course I need to know the most important thing right now:

How long before I can start riding again?

So I know we've got all kinds of medical histories out there.  Anyone have a similar exp and can tell me how long before you could get on a horse again?

Cindy - thoroughly bummed and dejected....sigh

Only an endurance rider would be saying, hey I broke my back, how soon can I get back in the saddle?  :)

Heal fast, Cindy!  Sorry I have no idea how long it will take to heal, but I'm betting someone will have had the same experience and can tell you!

Well, I did the last 25 miles of a 50 with a fractured sacrum (confirmed with xrays after the ride). It was certainly, um, less than pleasant.  =)  But it was only my third 50 and I REALLY wanted to finish!!  We turtled as I could pretty much only walk from then on.  =)   Going to the Dr's two days later and hearing the nurse say "Oh my God!" when she saw my bruises  nearly made it worth it.  It makes for a good story at least.  ;)

Get a good chiropractor.  My tailbone needed to be manipulated back into place once the swelling went down to finally help alleviate some of the symptoms.

I broke my tailbone shortly before giving birth to my second child.  Between the two, it was about five weeks before I could really ride very far.

The gal I worked on the other day receives regular chiropractic care, but her sacrum and pelvis is still way off.  She said her sacrum felt a lot better when she got off the table, and she rebooked another session.  The interesting thing about a crooked sacrum, it could also come from having crooked single bones in the cranium.  Her sphenoid (a cranial bone that is at the base of your brain) had a torsion, and when I worked to relieve the torsion, it relieved some torque in her pelvis!

I separated my sacrum joint in May of 2010 and that is the reason I did not compete for the entire year of 2010.  I was under chiropractic care for an entire year and still have twinging this year after a competition requiring adjustment again.  I can tell you I have never had pain like that.  On good days I'd get on my horse and ride and pay for it the next several weeks (owie).  My recommendation is to let it heal fully before trying to do any kind of serious riding.
