Need recommendations for a simple, low-cost (under $40, in case I lose it) veterinary stethoscope. Need for equine heart beats and gut sounds and the stethoscope needs to be long enough to reach from my ears to a horse's elbow without me having to hunch way over. I used my el cheapy one last nite and could barely hear my horse's heartbeat so it's time to move up. I do have a handheld digital heart rate monitor but want a decent manual stethoscope for the vet kit.

$40 is too low to get anything that is worth using.  The Army routinely has the cheapies in med kits and I've attempted to use them.  They are awful.  I would settle for nothing less than a Littmann Classic.  This is a very simple, bare bones stethoscope that still has excellent sound.  Littmanns will survive in a saddle bag while anything else will break sooner than later.  A new one costs $70.  Pay for it anyway.  Anything less is not worth your time

Nate beat me to the punch.  I agree.  You can’t beat a Littman, they last forever and you can order the large animal model that is long enough to reach without bending over (much).  You can get a heart rate on anything cheaper, but that’s about it.  Worthless for gut sounds.  Look on eBay.

Thanks Nate and Susan! What is the minimum length you'd suggest for equine use? 32? 28?

3M's Littman brand makes a special vet scope that has a nice long tube.
They are available from various suppliers on line. Google or your
favorite search engine can find them.

Sorry I can't recommend supplier as I get mine from the company store.

Depends on how tall you are and how short your horse!

The "cheapy" ones can be rotated around and the sound cut off. Check to see if you need to twist the end to "turn it back on" again. I prefer the cheapys after a few of the good ones fell into pieces at the vet check. They can be unscrewed and sometimes seem to do it on their own at the worst times.

It also gets easier if you practice a lot with the cheap stethoscopes. I have two good stethoscopes, but often can't get my hands on them at the right time at work. We also have the cheap ones strewn about the clinic, and after several months of using them, I got pretty good at using them.

We have a med supply store in town that sells for humans. They carry
stethoscopes, usually 3 or 4, ranging from very inexpensive to crazy expensive.

Last time I bought one was about 5 years ago. Cost $20-$30. They last a LONG
time, work, and usually come with an extra diaphragm.

And it isn't as painful when one walks away :)
