I don't think this was mentioned before, but most people I know would get off the horse and walk the last little bit into the vet check, so part of the recovery happens before they even get there.K.
I think the biggest factor is keeping the horse's core temperature down. That means sponging a lot on trail, slowing down on long climbs, but not dogging it along in the sun either.
