Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum led all the way to win the 160km endurance contest at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in France, riding the Australian-bred mare Yamamah in a race where only 22% of starters completed the race.

Just 38 horses from the 174 starters finished. Only three countries had the minimum of three riders in contention by the end of the race.

Twenty horses failed to complete the first loop, which was marred by the death of Costa Rican horse Dorada, who hit a tree in an accident 13.6km into the first loop and about 400m from the first check point.

"
Marijke Visser, a student, won the 2013 Young Riders Endurance title and also rides dressage. Her grey arabian mare, 10-year-old Laiza de Jalima, is owned by Dubai’s Sheikh Abdulla Bin Faisal Bin Saqr Al Qassimi and trained in The Netherlands. To prepare for the Games, the mare was sent to Belgium to train with Emile Docquier."

Does this mean that Marijke was "just" a jockey in the race?  Was she involved in the training and preparation of her horse or did she meet the horse just for the race?

Records for the mare show that since 2009, she's been ridden by 11 different riders, in France in 2009 and 2010, then after that in the UAE. Most recently, Marijke rode her to a 6th place in Numana in June of 2014 (don't know where Numana is?).

I'd say it's not unlike someone, say Christoph, training horses for other riders to come in to ride, say, the Tevis.

So yeah, sounds like she was more of a jockey for this race.

So how does a horse hit a tree with no evidence of slipping or falling first.
Seems not quite right to me.

?? Were you there?  How do you know there was no evidence of slipping or falling?

So how does a horse hit a tree?  It's a horse.  It's a wooded area.  Horses are unpredictable, and trees don't give.    Bad things can happen really fast on a horse.   Isn't this why we always sign a waiver before we are allowed to start a ride?

Run a horse far beyond its physical limits and it basically loses its mind.
That horse was running from its pain and did not care where.
The jockey was nothing more than a monkey on the horses back.

I was at a ride at a vet stop some years ago when 3 riders came charging in yelling about something. The lead horse was yanked to a stop. It was obviously in trouble. The guy is yelling for the vet and tearing at the saddle and the horse throws itself on the ground barely missing mashing the guy. It was like a whirling dervish. Up down thrash on the ground up down and by then the 3 jump on the horses neck and the vet is there with a shot of some kind. I tried to get the saddle out of the way and the guy yells at me to "get the hell out of here". My hold time was up so I took his advise.

That horse had been in trouble for awhile and the stupid rider thought it was a good idea to run to the vet instead of stopping before he made things really bad. The horse did not die that day but who knows what happened at home.

No evidence of slipping was in the report from FEI about the accident.

The FEI report did say there was no evidence that the horse slipped,
but I wonder how soon after the incident the FEI investigators got
there and how many horses had gone over the spot before that,
destroying whatever evidence there might have been. Oh, and the EMTs
and ambulance people caring for the rider probably didn't think to be
careful of what they were walking over. And does the FEI really care
why the horse did what it did?

Last year at a MN ride, in a wooded area, a horse hit a tree.  Not racing for FEI gold or anything like that.  Not at the beginning of the ride etc.  Rider banged up, horse  pulled, lame.  Got a BC at a 2014 ride.

Moral:  Stuff happens.

I'm glad the rider will be OK, but broken bones and internal injuries sounds like a long recovery ahead.   Sounds like a horrible accident.  Who really gives a rip on how it happened?

This is the same gal that got hurt at a ride in the USA last year. With her injuries she was not allowed to fly home for several weeks.
I know her as a person,  but not as a rider.  Great gal with lots of spunk...she'll heal and be back for more.
But I do mourn for the loss of her horse....
