I use a Garmin E-Trex 20 a lot. To optimize its use you can buy topo maps from Garmin that can be transferred to the unit. I have maps for about 5 states in the central US. I recorded numerous tracks and made maps for a NATRC ride. That part is a cumbersome process but if you only want to load the tracks to your BaseCamp program, manipulate them and transfer back to the unit, it works well. The E-Trex 20 has a color screen so it is easy to see things. The Dakota, Colorado and others named after states are preloaded with the maps of that state, otherwise are pretty similar.
