OK all of you that mark trails.  I have marked a LOT of trails but I've come up with an idea.  Have you ever tied the ribbons to clothespins?  My thought is that the ribbons could be used over and over.  The good, the bad, and the ugly please.  Thanks

We’ve always done it that way.  What region are you in?

Now I’m curious – what do people use in other regions for their trail markings?  Most of the rides I’ve been to in Central – the Texas part – has been ribbons on clothespins.

We always use clothespins - attach them to trees, sagebrush, grass clumps, dried out cow pies, old cow bones, stakes if nothing else,
the prickly and thorny bushes can be a problem...

I’ve done that for MANY years. To me, it’s the only way to go. Quick to attach, quick to detach, can be done from horseback easily. I clipped the ribbons on a long double strand of baling twine and slung it around my body diagonally. After the ride was over, I simply hung the lanyard (I guess that’s what I would call it) from a nail until next years’ ride. I don’t know of any bad or ugly – it’s all good. Hanging the lanyard with the ribbons clipped on also keeps the mice from chewing up the ribbon and making nests out of it.

We used wire hangers.  It held a lot of ribbons, and was easy to hang on a horse’s breast collar or saddle and easy to hang up in the closet for storage for the next ride.

Another handy technique I used was fiberglass rods (the kind used for electric fencing) driven into the ground when crossing a pasture that didn’t have bushes or tree limbs. I recommend a rubber mallet for driving the rods, otherwise you could split the fiberglass. Also, wear gloves, because the fiberglass splinters can get into your hands and that is painful – not too bad, but I would consider it slightly on the dangerous side. Clothespins clip on the rode easily and stay there.

Beware! Cows find surveyor’s tape fascinating and perhaps tasty. They can ruin your markings. We also lost a young heifer one time from her eating a lot of surveyor’s ribbon.

I have done that MANY Times and know other ride managers who have done the same.  Easier to put up and take down! And, you can reuse most!

Here in MN where most park and forest managers go ballistic over ribbons left this is standard procedure.  Yes, we have some ribbons that are probably a decade old.

Ribbons on clothes pins work great. For open areas with no trees we used milk jugs filled with sand and spray painted bright orange. Cows and elk tend to leave them alone. Waxed paper plates stapled to trees when arrows etc are needed....flour arrows on the ground

I manage a benefit CTR in Florida, this past November was our 12th year.   The first year Sherwin Williams donated a roll of "Wet Paint" banner tape, It is  3" wide, a heavier gauge than survey tape, and easily recognized. The entire yellow loop is from that roll of tape the first year.

At the end of the ride the de-marking team rolls the tape around the clothes pin, puts all tape of the same color in a box, ready for the next year.

I LOVE the milk jug idea.  These would be great at crucial turns IMO.  The only issue I see is that they might appear has horse eating milk jugs to horses that are not used to them.   Range cattle in my area will decimate ribbons within a couple days.  I was thinking of using those brightly colored clay pidgeons for turns,  The are reusable and biodegradable.  The problem is that you can't see them from far away, but they would give riders confidence after turns.  And heck, after the ride one could bring a manual thrower, a 12-guage and shoot the darn things instead of taking them out.

PS. Spray-painting cow patties works too because cows generally won't eat their own poo.

How do you attach the marking tape to the clothespin?  All I can figure is to thread it under the metal joint and tie it on.  Thanks again.

Yep that’s exactly how. Wedge it in and tie it in knot around one side of the clip.

Just tie the ribbon around one squeeze jaw of the clothes pin.  We sometimes have a “ribbon tying party”   Or someone takes ribbons and pins home and does it watching TV.
Same after ride, all ribbons rolled around the pins neatly and stored by colors.  They fit in pommel and cantle bags for carrying next time.  Smoothly rolled they last for several rides.

We stopped wrapping or tying the ribbon, it was too hard to re-use the clothespins if you change colors or need to re-use the clothespins.
Just slip the flagging in the clothespin - it will stay just fine without tying or wrapping.
