I have always been a Ben Johnson fan. My husband and I saw him roping in a rodeo in Livermore, CA back in 1953. He was the real thing, not just a Hollywood cowboy. I used to love his movies with John Wayne, Harry Carey, and Ward Bond.

How many people out there remember “The Searchers” starring John Wayne, Jeffrey Archer, and Natalie Wood? Basically, Indians tricked the sodbusters away from their home, and while the men were gone, Indians kidnapped the mother and her (under 10-year-old) daughter. John Wayne’s character had been in love with the mother, even though she was married to another man. Wayne and others went far away from the cabin to find Indians and then realized they had been tricked. They were 80 miles from home. In the movie, they men galloped their horses are far as the horse could handle it, nearly the whole 80 miles, but then Wayne’s horse, and probably others, dropped dead from exhaustion. Rather realistic for a movie.
I suspect the movie mentioned below was “Bite the Bullet” with Gene Hackman. I howled with laughter and had everyone in the theatre looking at me, because at the end of the endurance race, Hackman’s horse was heard to be in labored breathing, yet his nostrils were not flared, and the horse staggered across the railroad tracks to the finish. When the saddle (Western, of course) was pulled, the horse’s back was dry, but there was shaving cream all over the horse’s flanks, but none where a horse would foam in reality. The movie was based on a real incident, however.

It’s more “Hollywood” and hasn’t the character study that The Searchers has, even if John Wayne was never quite the actor as some. I really liked The Searchers. The book was great.

The Searchers is a great movie. The Cinematography is to die for. The movie is a great character study and rather ahead of its time. Never seen Bite the Bullet.

As soon as you mentioned the shaving cream I realized I'd seen that movie, remembering how fake that part was, but that is the only scene I remember so I'll have to watch it again! Most horse movies other than westerns and a few racing movies (Seabiscuit) are made for 12 year old girls and are pretty "lame" :) Cant wait to see what good ones folks come up with. I just started watching "Ruffian" which is an ESPN movie available in 10 minute segments on Youtube (you can play them together from a playlist)... seems pretty good so far. Its a TB racing movie though... not endurance.

I liked the movie about the endurance race. Didn't like that he died or that a lot of horses died too.

--Those old John Ford westerns never show enough of Ben Johnson in the saddle. It's like they just tease us all. I'll be watching a scene of Ben riding a horse over some rough country and I'll say to myself, "Wow, that was incredible." I think Ben was a way under-rated actor for most of his career, but I was glad when he got his Oscar for "The Last Picture Show." Another great movie actor that could ride was Sheb Wolley. He played Pete Nolan in Rawhide.
Why doesn't someone put together a winter watching endurance riders movie list! Kelley
A couple of the Duke’s better movies are “ The Cowboys” and “Hondo” True Grit was not that great overall but his last scene is a classic. And if you just want to go back to the old “heart throb” guys not many better looking than Errol Flynn (he was a jerk, but he could ride though) Nobody beats Clark Gable, he rode well in some of his pictures. I’ve long since forgotten the names except Gone With The WindDot Wiggins
One movie that is a good story line and features men who can really ride is "In Pursuit of Honor," starring Don Johnson, who it turns out is quite a good rider and actor. Check it out, the scene where a herd of cavalry horses responds to the bugle calls is wonderful. I've seen this movie more than once, I like it so much. Not perfect, but better than most.

I thought that John Wayne’s last movie, The Shootist, with a lovely, aged, Lauren Bacall, AND Jimmy Stewart, was one of his best. And I agree that Wayne was bigger than life, but he wasn’t a GREAT actor. To me, a great actor is one who can lose him or herself in the character he/she plays and doesn’t show his own character. John Wayne was pretty much always – John Wayne. Entertaining, however, and just right for most of his parts. Talk about GREAT actors – Daniel Day-Lewis, Johnny Depp…can’t think of the others right now. Johnny Depp rather kills his image by being who he is in private life, but boy – can he act. Such a diverse collection of parts…
Badly off topic,

Yes, that WAS a great movie. I had forgotten about that one. But if you haven’t seen The Shootist, do rent it. It’s quite a character study for John Wayne.

I liked the first one but hated the second because he killed Danny. Hated True Grit too because Wayne rode Blackie to death which was stupid stupid stupid. Even for a dumb movie. The only good thing about True Grit was last scene when he jumped the fence.

Best Western - Unforgiven. Eastwood, Hackman and Morgan Freeman.--

It was low profile, I only heard about it from a friend! But it is a really good movie with lots of eye candy horses and, well, Don Johnson and several others, they're Aussies, and man they can ride.

I personally think "The Quiet Man" was Duke's best role. I never get sick of that movie and all the colorful character actors in it.

Don't get me started on movies Kelley! I can put together all sorts of lists of great movies. Depends what you want. I can make a list of good tear-jerkers, esoteric movies made by the Soviets, silent classics, forgotten westerns, film noir, etc. I have a whole list devoted to Robert Mitchim. Love just about anything with Robert Mitchim in it. Heck, I just like to LOOK at Robert Mitchim. Sorry Truman, Duke was bigger than life but not much of a versatile actor. On Mon, Nov 24, 2014 at 7:16 PM, Kelley <reckles...@gmail.com> wrote:

Sent from my iPadBite your tongue! The Duke - none better’;-). One of my best friends I met in graduate school. He was a child prodigy - 20 years old in graduate school in the history departments in one of the best history departments in the US (Johns Hopkins). He was from Canada. His parents came from Lithuania to Montreal by the way of German concentration camps. He was a huge John Wayne fan. He would routinely quite lines from John Wayne movies to make his point - particularly when it involved picking up young female coeds for a night of fun;-).To him John Wayne was the ultimate in Americana. I have to agree with him given it was the early 1970’s. Here’s to my friend Arnuss Alsascus - the greatest John Wayne fan I’ve ever known. He is now retired for the faculty of the University of Calgary and still the worlds biggest fan of the Duke! He can quote ever famous line and some not so famous line from every John Wayne movie.Truman

Slim Pickens was one of our favorite characters. He was a rodeo clown at one point. We owned, back in the 1970s, a used 2-horse Fiberglas trailer that was said to have been owned by Slim. We were told he trailered his mule in it, the mule having been part of his clown act. I saw him one time at our county fair here in CA and I wanted so badly to walk up to him an tell him we had his old trailer, but I didn’t have the nerve then. Now, being older, I could have done that. He was truly fun to watch.

I too loved the "Man From Snowy River". In 1995 I went to Australia, stayed with one of the stuntmen from that movie, and many others filmed in Australia, and rode his horse Ace that he rode in that movie. He was also a bush racer and we went to many races while there.
This photo is me on Ace my first day there after we had chased some calves back to there pasture.

After I get done compiling the list of membership ideaS from here for Mike (which I am behind on :( I'm going to gather these movies in a list and post them to my blog and share. Always looking for a good horse movie!
Now isn't this better and much more fun than arguing about AERC rules?

Cowboy: They gotta stop some time!
John Wayne: Noooo, human rides a horse until it dies, then goes on afoot. Comanche comes along, gets that horse up, rides him 20 more miles. Then eats him.
