Hello "Helper,"

The e-mail forwarded below arrived at my inbox today just before 1 P.M. I called the telephone no. and spoke with a foreign sounding gentleman to notify him that I did not order the item noted: a Microsoft Surface Pro.

He was much concerned that my "IP" had been stolen and wished to be of help. I am today asking my credit card banks to consider such an order a
fraud matter. I ask you to suggest ways to assure me that my "identity" online has not been compromised.

Many thanks!

R. E.,

Hopefully, notifying your bank should take care of it.  If your card or account number was billed, then you should receive a new card.  It may have just been a phishing email so that you would call and give them your information.  Hopefully you did not do that.  I doubt that the item will arrive at your door.

I judged that to be the case (somebody was phishing), as I spoke by telephone with the ever-so-kind Indian-sounding gentleman who was distressed by my informing him I had not ordered the high priced item and wouldn't pay for it. When he couldn't acknowledge that I was warning him I considered it a case of fraud and was notifying the credit card banks and police, he suddenly hung up. Odd, but also a tad rude.

My wife and I do not do business over the internet, not banking, not even filing IRS 1040 forms. They claim all sorts of things: businesses, banks, even "dot gov" claims security I doubt anyone really has. As my granddaddy taught us, if you know a secret and tell even one other human. . . it's no longer a secret!

(What's worse, frankly, I forget stuff faster than I can write it down these days. It's frustrating.)

Thanks for commiserating!

You’re welcome.

We had a near miss back in simpler days before even email was prevalent, when my husband was in seminary.

My husband got a phone call from a computer place asking for some details about the computer he had ordered.  When he told the caller from the store that he hadn’t ordered a computer, the caller said that the person who ordered it had sounded nervous.  We think that my husband had purchased something with a credit card and had dropped the slip.  That was when we were given those long slips that come out of a kind of roller apparatus, where all the info was on the slip, so the thief had the whole credit card number.  We found that the computer was supposed to be delivered to an address where the house was empty.  We notified the police in case someone showed up there looking for a package, but we don’t know what happened after that.
