Hello,

I’m hoping you can help me understand the best way to track publications associated with specific grant IDs in Europe PMC. While Europe PMC looks like a potentially excellent tool for this, I’m seeing some discrepancies between different search methods.

As an example, I’m looking for publications associated with grant ID 301005.

This grant appears correctly in Grant Finder:
With one associated publication:
However, this grant ID does not appear as a selectable option in the Grant ID field in Advanced Search. Instead, I have to enter it manually, for example: (GRANT_ID:("301005")) - Search results - Europe PMC

In addition, there seems to be a notable discrepancy between the publications associated with this grant in Europe PMC compared to PubMed.

Searching for the same grant ID in PubMed returns five publications (all of which appear relevant), but does not include the publication listed by Europe PMC::
Is it possible to understand:
  • Why the grant ID is not available as a selectable option in Advanced Search,
  • Why the number of associated publications differs between Europe PMC and PubMed, and
  • How grant–publication links are curated or ingested differently across these systems?
This would help me decide on the most appropriate search strategy for tracking grant-linked outputs. Please do let me know if you need more information from my side.

Many thanks,

Peter

Hi Peter,

Regarding the Advanced Search issue, all available grant IDs in Europe PMC should appear as selectable options. It was missing due to a data refresh issue on our side, which has now been resolved. You should now see grant ID 301005 in the dropdown.

Just to note, the Grant Finder tool only includes information on grants awarded by Europe PMC funders.

As for the discrepancy in the number of associated publications between Europe PMC and PubMed, this is expected. Europe PMC receives grant - publication association from multiple sources, including Crossref, PubMed records, Researchfish, our funder supplied data, and internal text mining. Since each source has different coverage, the resulting set of linked publications may differ, with PubMed being just one of several inputs.

Also for this particular grant that you mentioned, Wellcome provides us in a short format (in this case, 301005). However, some publications cite a longer variant of the same grant ID (301005/Z/23/Z). We have now added this longer form as an alias for this grant to improve linkage.

I hope this clarifies things. Please feel free to get in touch if you have any further questions.

Thanks,
Madhu
