Postdoctoral positions in Coastal Processes, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD
Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) Coastal Processes Group, Integrative Oceanography Division, UCSD, seeks up-to three postdoctoral scholars to study coastal processes, change, and hazards. Potential topics include: coastal change detection and remote sensing, beach morphology modeling, coastal cliff erosion processes, and development of real time coastal hazard observation systems and predictions. The postdocs will help develop methods and evaluate factors driving coastal change and hazards. A strong background in coastal processes, quantitative geomorphology, change detection, and ability to work with large datasets are desired. The postdocs will be located at SIO in La Jolla, California, USA, and work in close collaboration with researchers and students in the Coastal Process Group (
https://siocpg.ucsd.edu/). Additional information is on the UCSD postdoctoral website.
Minimum Qualifications:- PhD in coastal oceanography, geomorphology, geology, geophysics, remote sensing, engineering, GIS or a relevant related field.
- Ability to pursue research both independently and collaboratively
- Programming experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Research focus in physical, geomorphic, coastal processes, geomorphology, change detection
- Experience with collecting/processing/analyzing high resolution topographic data to inform/derive data-driven models
- Experience with operating/developing research-level coastal remote sensing tools (lidar, drone, camera, etc.)
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with PIs, co-PIs, graduate students, and SIO researchers to analyze new and historical coastal morphology datasets.
- Relate coastal morphology changes to waves, tides, rain, and other environmental forces.
- Develop and calibrate predictive models of coastal change and hazards.
- Develop improved in situ and remote sensing coastal monitoring methods.
- Publish research in peer-reviewed journals and present results at scientific meetings and conferences
Funding & Timeline: Initial appointment will be for 24 months. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position can begin as soon as January 2024.
