The Radar Lab in the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to conduct novel research at the interface of geodesy, radar geophysics, and Arctic environmental science. The postdoctoral research associate will join a collaborative team to develop novel geodetic imaging techniques for improved characterization of surface topography, vegetation canopy estimates, and surface topographic change estimates over periglacial landscapes. This project is primarily funded by the NASA Surface Topography and Vegetation Decadal Survey Incubation (https://science.nasa.gov/earth-science/decadal-surveys/decadal-stv/); the successful postdoctoral research associate would have the opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research and help define science measurement needs and sensor architectures for the Surface Topography and Vegetation (STV) targeted observable.

The postdoctoral research associate will work with Dr. Roger Michaelides in the Radar Lab. The Radar Interferometry and Geospatial Science Laboratory (‘Radar Lab’) employs a variety of remote sensing instruments and geospatial techniques to study dynamic surface processes and environmental Earth system properties, with an emphasis on the Arctic and periglacial landscapes (https://sites.wustl.edu/radar/). The Radar lab has an emphasis on radar remote sensing modalities (e.g. InSAR, SAR, radar altimetry, and ground penetrating radar), but also uses LiDAR, hyperspectral, and optical remote sensing techniques in conjunction with field work.

The ideal candidate has a Ph.D. in Earth Science or a related field, such as Physics, Geophysics, Electrical Engineering, or Environmental Engineering. Completion of all degree requirements is required at the time of appointment.

Desired skills include:
  1. Demonstrated excellence in scientific writing;
  2. Experience with remote sensing data analysis, particularly SAR or InSAR;
  3. Scientific programming experience.
How to apply:
Please submit an application at the following link, following all written instructions and including all required materials: https://wustl.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/External/job/Washington-University-Danforth-Campus/Postdoctoral-Research-Associate---Earth--Environmental--and-Planetary-Sciences_JR97129

Required materials:
  1. Letter of application.
  2. Curriculum vita, including all relevant publications, education, and previous employment.
  3. Name and contact information for up to three references.
Applications received by November 1st, 2026, will receive fullest consideration; however, this advertisement will remain open until the position is filled. Applicants are encouraged to apply early and reach out directly to Roger Michaelides (roger.mi...@wustl.edu) to discuss the position and any questions that they may have.
