Assistant Professor, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Tulane University, New Orleans, LA
 Tulane University, one of the nation’s premier research institutions, seeks a
 collaborative scholar to serve within the School of Science and
 Engineering as an assistant professor in the vibrant Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences.  The successful candidate will be a recognized scholar who will enhance and augment the Solid Earth research team and contribute to our education and service missions.  We seek a candidate whose research has applications in energy systems, including critical minerals for the energy transition, and who strengthens university-wide energy initiatives.
 
Department Overview
 
Founded in 1926 and renamed in 2003, the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences is committed to developing, disseminating, and applying knowledge about the interconnected physical, chemical, and biological evolution of the Earth and other planetary bodies through evidence-informed teaching and training, and service and engagement with the broader community. We provide students with the knowledge and both independent and teamwork skills to become scientists, lifelong learners, and responsible citizens, and to apply new and existing knowledge to address challenges affecting human society and the environment. The Department offers bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD degrees. Our faculty work collaboratively across disciplines and programs at Tulane, fostering an environment of mutual support and innovation in research, teaching, and service. We value open communication, shared decision-making, and a culture of respect that empowers faculty, staff, and students to thrive.
 
The Department has strong ties to the Tulane Energy Institute, Bywater Institute, and Murphy Institute, and will be a leader in the university-wide Institute of Advanced Energy Studies, which is in development.  This position aligns directly with the department’s vision for advancing research in emerging, societally relevant areas over the next 3–4 years, positioning Tulane at the forefront of efforts to integrate Earth and Environmental Sciences with sustainability and energy innovation. The Department’s focus on interdisciplinarity provides exceptional opportunities for collaboration across disciplines and supports the development of cutting-edge research and educational initiatives linking with the broader STEM fields.

Qualifications
  • PhD in Earth and Environmental Sciences or related field.
  • Excellent record of published research, external funding, and teaching commensurate with appointment as either assistant or associate professor with tenure.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Desired start date: July 1, 2026.
