We seek applications for a fully funded PhD student position at the University of
Iceland to work on Engineering Seismology and Statistical Seismology, with
a focus on aftershocks, seismic hazard modeling, and machine
learning. The position
is a part of the project "OEFIS: A Short-term Operational Earthquake
Forecasting System in Southwest Iceland" funded by the Icelandic
Centre for Research (RANNIS) for three years.
Requirements: Master's degree in geophysics, physics, statistics, seismology,
engineering seismology or engineering. Proficiency
in computer programming (Python). Good
written and spoken English skills.
PhD research focus on investigating how aftershock patterns shape seismic hazard and risk, developing next-generation earthquake forecasting systems and short-term probabilistic seismic hazard estimation.
The PhD candidate will collaborate closely
with an international, multidisciplinary research team of experts from the
University of Iceland, the Icelandic Meteorological Office, University College
London, GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, University of Naples
Federico II, and the Swiss Seismological Service of ETH Zurich.
Application
deadline: May 21, 2025
