I'd like to bring to your attention upcoming employment opportunities with the USGS for entry level and advanced level Physical Science Technician positions with the Volcano Science Center field engineering and instrumentation teams.  We seek to fill positions located at the Cascades (CVO, Vancouver, WA), Hawaiian (HVO, Hilo, HI), and Alaska (AVO, Anchorage, AK) Volcano Observatories. Positions can be filled at the GS-6, GS-8, and GS-10 grade levels.  We seek applicants with skills in field instrumentation and basic electronics, such as installation and maintenance of dataloggers, webcams, telemetry systems, solar power systems, seismometers, infrasound, and GPS sensors. These skill sets (some of which can be trained for entry level positions) will be applied to installing, operating, and maintaining the array of field monitoring instrumentation that the USGS Volcano Science Center has deployed across the landscape to monitor active and potentially active volcanoes.

These are permanent positions pending a one-year probationary performance period.

The job announcement will be posted on USA Jobs (https://www.usajobs.gov/) and should be easily found by the links and information below, or by searching for "USGS" and "Physical Science Technician" and “Vancouver”, “Hilo”, and or “Anchorage” in the Keywords and Location fields.

The announcements for these positions open on Monday, June 3, 2024 and will remain open until Friday, June 14, or until the day that 35 applicants (per grade level) have been received, whichever comes first.

The announcement number is USGS-SAC-24-12421859-DE-MB for the GS10
The announcement number is USGS-SAC-24-12422982-DE-MB for the GS08

Some additional notes for prospective applicants include:

Applicants must be U.S. Citizens.

Technician series positions have either a work experience or positive education requirement (or some combination of the two). Applicants who do not have either the required work or educational experience will be disqualified from further consideration.

Applicants should submit ALL copies of their unofficial transcripts if seeking educational credit for qualifications. This is especially important if they've attended multiple schools. The transcripts are needed to confirm that the applicant has completed the required coursework for the basic education requirement. ALL applicants regardless of whether they are current USGS, or whether they are current federal employees in the series MUST do this.
If applicants are qualifying based on education and they have completed their degree requirements, but their transcripts have not yet been updated, applicants may submit a letter from the school indicating that they have completed their degree requirements along with a copy of their most recent unofficial transcripts. Transcripts must contain up to date information.
Resumes should include at least a month and year, along with their relevant work experience underneath each period of employment. If applicants have current or prior federal service, they should list the grade levels. Resumes or CVs should contain enough details regarding their work experience to determine whether they have the specialized experience or not. Assumptions will not be made based on a position title listed on an applicant's resume. Please also see USAJOBS Help Center | What should I include in my federal resume?
Applicants MUST submit ALL required documentation prior to the close of the announcement.  All documents must be legible.  Applicants can e-mail the contact person in the vacancy announcement to confirm that their documents are all uploaded correctly. Sometimes the documents submitted are blurry and difficult to read.
Applicants may also access the HELP section of the USAjobs site where more detail regarding the federal hiring process is provided. https://www.usajobs.gov/Help/

We look forward to receiving applications from strong qualified candidates.
