Dear All,

I am recruiting PhD students for Fall 2024 to join the Rock Deformation Lab in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Southern California.

Our research group studies the rheology of minerals and the deformation processes active in plate boundary faults and shear zones through field observations, deformation experiments, and microstructural analysis of natural and experimental samples. New and ongoing projects include: the rheology of subduction zone rocks, amphibole deformation mechanisms, and the strength of the mid-to-lower crust.

These are fully funded 5-year opportunities, and the application deadline is January 5th, 2024. Students who have earned a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Earth sciences are welcome to apply, and those with previous experience in experimental rock deformation are particularly encouraged. More information about the application process and departmental standards for admission can be found here: https://dornsife.usc.edu/earth/graduate/grad-admissions/. Note that GRE scores are no longer required.

Please share this opportunity with anyone who may be interested. Prospective students can contact me at sey...@usc.edu (please include your CV, how your research interests overlap with the lab, and any questions).

Apologies for cross-posting!

All the best,

Caroline
