The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (Geophysics Section) at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) in Munich, Germany, is seeking applications from enthusiastic young researchers for a 3-year postdoctoral position funded by the state of Bavaria (Germany). The project entitled “Geothermie Allianz Bayern (GAB3.0) Teilprojekt Induzierte Seismizität” joins research groups from LMU and the Technical University Munich and aims to evaluate and mitigate the risk of ground shaking on the building stock by induced /triggered seismicity. The advertised postdoctoral position concerns the seismological part of the project. One prominent aim is the coupling of physical models of wave propagation with surrogate models and/or  AI methods (e.g., GANs) to prognose the ground shaking in a detailed but still cost effective way. Beside these AI based developments the successful applicant will also work in close connection to an already established working group on adaptive traffic light systems which are based on a coupled FEM/ADER-DG schema. In the GAB3.0 project the focus lies on a wider range of geothermal reservoirs rather than hydrothermal reservoirs. Further milestones of the workplan include studies on the usability of dark fiber DAS networks to help to estimate area wide PGV maps as well as experiments to estimate the in situ stress orientation at reservoir level using novel six degree of freedom (rotational & translational motion) measurements.

The successful candidate is expected to hold a Ph.D. in Earth or related sciences. Ideally the candidate has experience with one of the current wavefield simulation and multi-physics modeling codes (e.g., specfem, seissol, salvus, moose, or else) and preferably some experience with ML/AI methods. The Department has a powerful Linux-cluster (partly equipped with gpus) and access to local supercomputer facilities (lrz.de). More information can be found at www.geophysik.uni-muenchen.de. Complete applications must include a statement of research interests (one page), CV, publication list, and names and addresses of at least two referees. Deadline for applications is May 01, 2025. Later applications may be considered until the position is filled. Applications should be sent to: Dr. Joachim Wassermann, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Theresienstrasse 41, 80333 Munich, Germany, e-mail: J.Wass...@lmu.de.
